it advertises modestly as being in the category "best small family Hotels", But what a place ! London is an expensive place when it comes to hotels, and this is an expensive one of the sort. But leave petty money consideration aside, if you feel like you deserve a special treatment for a change. Like plunging into the London of Victorian times, it may give you a memory for life, priceless. The lobby, the bar and the rooms are pure luxury and the antique mahogany lelevator something left from glorious days, when London was the hub of THE empire.. The Reception is slightly on the cool side, especially when you complain that your £ 3oo accomodation is cold because the central heating packed up.It took a few hours to have it fixed.by kicking in the reverse air condition unit, which also needed repair. The only comment of the concierge was: " it can be cold in London, I know". Well London is notorious for calamitous heaters, but we would not expect to be exposed to this at THE GORING where royalties hold their wedding receptions. But the restaurant made even. If, like me, you believe the English have the best table manners for the worst cooking, this is the place for changing your mind. The Goring restaurant is rated 6th best in London It was English cuisine at its best, nobody roasts a meat like "les rosbifs", I take my hat off for their Beef Wellington and it was not to believe that the huge cheese trolley was covered entirely with English Cedars and Stiltons. And since the Brits don't (yet) make wines , the wine card featured some of the best from South Africa, Aiustralia or New Zealand which nevertheless leaves one with a taste of Empire. Of course, the cutlery and crystals upheld their reputation, particularly as the dining room was decorated for Christmas, one of the best I ever saw, with special light effects to the theme of Winter Wonderland. After this you may feel like there should always be an England and take this good mood over to join the select crowd in the elegant bar room and cheer to the Queen.
