“relatively good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

This is one of the 'acceptable' hostels I have been to in London. Normally, they are really crowded and cramped. This place is no exception, but much better than many other hostels. There are only two-bunk beds (and no three-four bunks, as in many a London hostel), the staff is all foreign and are very friendly and interesting to talk to. Close to British Museum and walking distance to Oxford Street (& many more attractions). Will stay here again.

“Favorite hostel in London”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

I've stayed in the Astor Museum Inn twice in the past few years and had an excellent experience both times. The building and rooms were clean and comfortable both stays. It's location right next the British Museum in the heart of london is great. You're never more than a short tube ride from the popular attractions and neighborhoods. And free breakfast is always nice.

The best thing about the Astor Museum is the friendly, helpful staff, and kitchen area/hangout room that encourages meeting other travelers. Everyone drinks and chats in the kitchen. Traveling solo I met a number of people going to the same clubs I was on a number of nights and were happy to go as a group. Being walking distance from Fabric is also a big plus.

I'd recommend it for its laid-back inviting atmosphere, excellent location, and good value.

“Pretty bad but excellent location.”

I stayed here with my boyfriend in January for a week. The location is fantastic and the absolute best thing about this hostel - close to a lot of pubs, the theatres, the British Museum and a couple of tube stations which makes getting to farther sights really easy. The room itself (we had a private) was pretty grimy. We were told that we couldn't check in earlier than 2pm because the rooms were being cleaned. However when we finally got the keys to our room, we found a giant clump of hair right in the middle of the carpet. It looked like all that they have "cleaned" were the sheets as everything else was just as disgusting. The whole annex building is very old and is need of major reno. There are no stoppers on the doors, so be prepared to be woken up by slamming doors at all times of the day or night. In our experience, we didn't find the staff to be very helpful at all.

“Decent hostel in central location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 December 2011

London is not a cheap city. Even the hostels are expensive. For what amounts to a lot of money in some places, here you can get a decent dorm bed in a "rustic" (i.e. old) building, sharing showers and bathrooms. Depending on where they place you, you might be in a second building three blocks from the main address. This building is not attended by staff, although it is cleaned, so it is slightly less safe. However, it is in a good part of London, so this is a relative judgement - the area appears to be quite safe.

The lockers are really just wire-frame drawers under the bed, so it is difficult to get a true sense of security for the stuff you leave there.

Even the "private bath" rooms appear to all share bathrooms and showers, at least in the second building.

All that said, the hostel is in a decent location. It is within easy walking distance of entertainment districts and night life of all types and orientations.

Breakfast consists of sugar cereals and bread with jams. Very little to no protein is on offer, so you will essentially work off of carbs and sugar for the first hour of every morning, if you even bother eating here.

Room Tip: Ask to be in the main building. If they place you in the second building, ask if the room has a priv...
