The YHA London St. Pancras is an hostel with two sides. On one side, it is very cheap and the location is spectacular. Not for the people that are looking for a nice view, but it is excellent for the adventurers out there. The hostel is located within viewing distance of both the nearest subway station (King's Cross) and the international trainstation (King's Cross st. Pancras). Within minutes you can be on your way in any direction with the metro. Considering the impressive location, the prices are on the low side for London standards.
The low price has a downside. Everything costs money in this hostel. There is no breakfast included in the prices, you have to pay 50 pence for 10 minutes of internet and you even need to pay rent for the towels. It is important to mention that the personell is very nice, and they should not be blamed for the lack of service, but they don't even have a mailbox for your postcards, which is slightly annoying. Furthermore, the quality of the bathroom is appalling. In our 6-person room the toilet was leaking, the shower curtain was hanging off it's hinges and the shower itself was often cold and the power of the waterbeam was very low. The worse part of the bathroom was that it was kinda mouldy and dirty in the ceiling and on the walls.
The room itself was nice enough. We had 3 bunk beds, that were quite sturdy. Every bed had it's own nightlight, which is nice in a room for so many people. The matrasses were pretty hard and firm. Personally, I prefer them that way, but it could be uncomfortable for certain people. The sheets were nice and warm, and the pillow was soft and pretty large. Besides the bad bathroom, we also had a broken window. The handle was broken which meant that we could not close the window. The temperature wasn't the problem, but rather the amount of noise coming from the street below.
The bar area downstairs and the tv loungeroom look very nice. They also have 24 hour staff at the reception, which is a big plus. Furthermore, they have a luggage and washing room downstairs which deliver extra facilities though (again) they are not free.
All in all, the YHA Hostel is very nice due to it's location and the sleeping comfort. It is ideal for the active traveler that only needs a place to sleep during the nights. It is less suitable for the people that are looking for a lot of comfort and that want to stay in the room all day. Be ready to pay extra for everything (including the membership costs for the YHA of 10 pounds that is not mentioned when you book through certain third-party websites). But the nice staff and decent facilities make up for the extra costs a little bit.
