“Cheap, but simple hostel at a very nice location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

The YHA London St. Pancras is an hostel with two sides. On one side, it is very cheap and the location is spectacular. Not for the people that are looking for a nice view, but it is excellent for the adventurers out there. The hostel is located within viewing distance of both the nearest subway station (King's Cross) and the international trainstation (King's Cross st. Pancras). Within minutes you can be on your way in any direction with the metro. Considering the impressive location, the prices are on the low side for London standards.

The low price has a downside. Everything costs money in this hostel. There is no breakfast included in the prices, you have to pay 50 pence for 10 minutes of internet and you even need to pay rent for the towels. It is important to mention that the personell is very nice, and they should not be blamed for the lack of service, but they don't even have a mailbox for your postcards, which is slightly annoying. Furthermore, the quality of the bathroom is appalling. In our 6-person room the toilet was leaking, the shower curtain was hanging off it's hinges and the shower itself was often cold and the power of the waterbeam was very low. The worse part of the bathroom was that it was kinda mouldy and dirty in the ceiling and on the walls.

The room itself was nice enough. We had 3 bunk beds, that were quite sturdy. Every bed had it's own nightlight, which is nice in a room for so many people. The matrasses were pretty hard and firm. Personally, I prefer them that way, but it could be uncomfortable for certain people. The sheets were nice and warm, and the pillow was soft and pretty large. Besides the bad bathroom, we also had a broken window. The handle was broken which meant that we could not close the window. The temperature wasn't the problem, but rather the amount of noise coming from the street below.

The bar area downstairs and the tv loungeroom look very nice. They also have 24 hour staff at the reception, which is a big plus. Furthermore, they have a luggage and washing room downstairs which deliver extra facilities though (again) they are not free.

All in all, the YHA Hostel is very nice due to it's location and the sleeping comfort. It is ideal for the active traveler that only needs a place to sleep during the nights. It is less suitable for the people that are looking for a lot of comfort and that want to stay in the room all day. Be ready to pay extra for everything (including the membership costs for the YHA of 10 pounds that is not mentioned when you book through certain third-party websites). But the nice staff and decent facilities make up for the extra costs a little bit.

“A decent enough place to stay.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

YHA London St. Pancras is a very dual hostel in terms of quality. It has some strong good aspects and some strong bad ones, and whether or not you'll enjoy a stay here is probably very dependent on what you're expecting to get out of it.

On the positive side: the staff is friendly and helpful. The bedrooms were alright, and the beds were at least semi-decent. Most everything was fairly clean. And the location is really excellent. I really feel this last point deserves special mention: this YHA is located *right* next to King's Cross. You can get out of bed, walk into an Underground station and be pretty much anywhere in London in fifteen minutes flat. Oh, and it's pretty cheap, too.

On the negative side: the bathroom we used was a mess. Terribly moldy, cold, the shower was an absolute joke, and the shower curtain was hanging off its hinges. The cleaning staff has a habit of just *entering* at around 10, 11, knocking out of force of habit before opening the doors and just peeking in. And there's a definite sense of getting nickle-and-dimed in this hostel: you need to be a YHA member (10 quid) or you'll be hit with an additional fee (3 quid per night). There's internet access, 50 pence for 10 minutes, and storage lockers, 2 quid per use... don't expect to get much for free. And finally, while the beds are decent, they are by no means comfortable. Don't expect to sleep in, essentially.

What this means is that if you're looking for a hostel to crash in inbetween exploration trips, the central location and relative cheapness make it fairly worthwhile. If you're looking for a place to actually hang out for a spell... well, they *try* to make it worth it, but in this case I'd advise you to keep looking.

Room Tip: The six-person room 201 has (at time of writing) a malfunctioning window that doesn't close prop...

“Good value for money, but hidden pricetags”

I stayed with 6 friends in a room at YHA. The room itself was pretty big, the bathroom was a toilet, a sink and a hole in the wall that was called a shower. The showercurtain was broken and kept falling down. I didn't really care but with a little effort the bathroom could have been better. The lobby is really nice, good atmosphere and a place to sit and eat.

What's worse is the fact that every person needs to be a member to stay in this Hostel. When we booked nobody informed us about this. We had to pay an extra 60 pounds to stay in the hostel. 10 pounds isn't much but for a cheap hostel it's a pretty big chunk. Also there was no free internet, you had to pay 50 pence for every 10 minutes - retarted.

The location however is great and even though I don't agree with some choices it's worth staying there if you don't want to spend to much money.

“Favourite London Hostel”

This was by far the cleanest, best kept hostel I've ever stayed at in London. We stayed in a 5 bed room and we were very impressed with how nice the room looked when we arrived. We chose this hostel because we had an early morning train out to Paris and it was an ideal location to get us there in the morning but it was also super easy to get around to other attractions in the city before we left. I would highly recommend this hostel to anyone looking for an easy base to see the city.

“Great Location!”

Loved the location. Easy to get to anywhere in London.
Biggest Negative is they charge for internet. We paid the fee and it did not always work in the room. We had to go down into the lobby.
I stayed in a private double. Bed was okay. Room size was what to be expected, but we had a great view of St Pancras Renaissance Hotel. Bathroom needed update and had an awkward shower...hope you don't mind showering in the dark. There is also no handsoap in the bathroom.
Room had a bed, a wardrobe and one chair.

Room Tip: Located on a busy street. We were on the 6th floor and still could hear the traffic a bit. but didn...
