“Excellent Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

My boyfriend and I spent 2 nights at the Cumberland in an Executive Room. We'd booked the hotel during the Guoman January sale so paid just £109 per night. The hotel is in a brilliant location being less than a minute from the Marble Arch tube station on the central line and therefore at the end of Oxford Street. The Executive Room was smaller than I'd expected but was very clean and had a really great shower. The heating in our room wasn't working so an electric heater had been left in our room which was fine. As we were staying in an Executive Room we had free 'pay' movies and access to the Guoman Lounge. The lounge served free tea and coffee all day and pastries and croissants in the morning with canapes and wine/bottled beer in the evening. This was particularly good as it meant we had a free breakfast and a free glass of wine before going out in the evening. The only gripe really was that the room walls were very thin, next door had a young baby which cried all night and you could easily here laughing and talking. Other than that I would stay again providing I could get a good deal.

“Lavish reception and bars, slightly disapointing stay!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

The hotel is in an excellent loaction and when you walk in the recetion area is really modern, although not overly welcoming.

We were staying for one night, as my friend had just flown in from Canada. If we had been staying for longer i would of asked to move rooms. The room was very cold, and the heating didnt seem to be blowing out anything more than tepid air and the draft from the window was terrible. The bathroom is very nice with modern fittings but our glass bowl sink was filty!

The room itself was lovely and the beds were very very comfortable and large.

It was a noisy nights sleep as we were next to the lift bay and the life beeping as it arrived at our floor kept waking me up, as did the people going back to their rooms. Room service also knocked us awake at 9.15am (my friend was VERY jetlagged). As we didnt need to check out until midday we were a bit miffed.

The staff were great, and polite and the lady on reception checked us into another room as ours wasnt ready.. (sort of wish we'd waited for a non ift area room!)

A good base for exploring, but not sure i'd pay full price!

“Interesting update”

I hadn't been to the Cumberland for quite some years so was quite shocked when I walked into the lobby. Gone was the traditional styles, now replaced by highly contemporary imagery.

The rooms were very good and it is obvious the Management of the hotel are making a huge effort to place the Hotel at the luxury end of the Group which also owns Thistle. I would pitch this hotel against the equivalent in London any day and expect it to hold its own. Staff are attentive to one's needs and always very polite. Cleanliness is as good as it gets and overall comfort is as one would expect from a hotel of this stature.

If your budget can stretch, treat yourself to dinner at Gary Rhodes W1 fine dining restaurant in the hotel. The Brasserie is great (also Gary Rhodes) but noisy, the W1 restaurant is like a pool of quiet calm and the food is very very good. The service matches the food and you really do feel you have experienced something to remember.

Room Tip: Treat yourself and get an upgrade to an executive room so you are looking down Park Lane from high u...

“Good if you can get a deal for it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Just back from a 1 night stay in this hotel. This is a much bigger hotel than I realised, with 8 Floors and many business people using it during the week. So try and get a weekend offer. Location is big plus as it's near to Marble Arch Tube and Oxford Street shops. On first impressions when entering the Hotel Lobby is decorated in a Modern Art Gallery style with lots of open space....... shame the rooms are not as spacious.
Room that we had was a quiet room on 8th floor overlooking rooftops rather than the road (so as to avoid the traffic noise) Our tv had a few main channels that didnt work but we didnt complain as we werent going to watch tv much. Bathroom is well stocked and the shower is powerful although the showerhead cannot be angled very much. The bed in our opinion was very soft but we like a harder mattress, and the bed Linens were of a high standard.
We got a deal through Late rooms on a Sunday night for £75 (room only)so the price we paid for the good location was good value. Plenty places to eat nearby so we didn't feel that it was worth paying the extra for breakfast. Overall score 6/10
There are much worse, smaller and older hotels charging more than this in London, so if this Location suits and you can get a deal then it is definately worth considering.

Room Tip: Choose a high floor room facing the courtyards to avoid traffic noise.

“Not a 4 star hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Just returned from a 2 night stay at this hotel with friends and have to say we very dissapointed. We ended up having 3 different rooms over the 2 nights and our friends had 2 rooms. Granted it was a cold weekend but clearly the hotel heating struggled clearly to cope. Our first room had such draft coming from the very old windows that you could feel it in bed. The bed it self was against the wall which meant having to climb over the other person to get out and the room was very tired looking. Despite being promised and given another room number we returned to find that this had been blocked and therefore given a different room which you could not swing a cat in and the heating did not work at all. A third room across the road in another building was found for us at 2am in the morning!

Sorry but not impressed!
