“Cheap & cheerful”

Stayed in the UMI London 5 - 9th Feb 2012. After reading some of the other reviews I was a little concerned (thieving staff, awful smell etc.) Personally I found the hotel reasonably comfortable & good value for money in an expensive city. Staff were always polite & courteous. I didn't use the restaurant, however it always seemed full at meal times. I had a single room on the first floor which was small but useable. If I have any complaint it is that the floors (throughout the first floor at least) were very uneven & anyone who is unsteady on their legs might find this a problem. They also creak alarmingly. If you happen to get an insomniac or somnambulist (sleep walker) next door the creaking of the floorboards as they move around would probably keep you awake! Also, the hotel would benefit from secondary glazing as the old single glazed windows are cold & slightly draughty. One final comment, I think the hotel is long overdue for a makeover. The carpets & furniture are looking decidedly tatty & in need of refurbishment. If you don't mind that & can settle for average rather than luxury then I would recommend the hotel.

“Excellent Value in a Pricey City”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

I stayed here in November 2011 and I was satisfied with my stay. Its hard to find a good, sensibly priced hotel in London. The decor was nothing to brag about and the buildings old age is very obvious. The amenities were all there though (bed, TV, private bathroom with shower, etc) and as a busy tourist using the room as a crash pad I found the accommodation to be comfortable. The staff was incredibly helpful and nice. I found that they had native english speakers working during the day and non native english speakers at night. There are two tube stops less than a 5 minute walk away too (Baywater and Queensway)! If you are not looking for a lavish pampering experience, this is not your hotel. But if you are a tourist looking for somewhere to recharge your batteries after a long day in one of the worlds most amazing cities, then this is a great option.

Room Tip: *non smoking rooms are on lower floors and therefore closer to the street so you may hear more noise...

Thank you for writing your review following your recent stay with us. I am pleased to hear that you were satisfied with your stay. I understand from your comments that the street noise might have disturbed your sleep. On your next stay please do ask us to be put you on a higher floor as we would be glad to do so.
I would like to take this opportunity to point out that all our rooms are non-smoking and smoking anywhere in the building is strictly prohibited.
Thank you once again for your comments, and we hope to welcome you back to the umi London.

“Great value for money”

When you only pay £32pp for a room in central London you don't expect much. But I was pleasantly surprised with this hotel. Ok, the rooms were old, esp the bathroom definitely in need of refurbishment. The shower was either extremely hot or ice cold and no water pressure, but the bathroom was clean. The room was small and the interior nothing special. But the service and all the staff were extremely friendly whether at reception or in the restaurant. The continental breakfast was included in the price. You get a choice you have to fill in on a form and everything extra has to be paid. But what you get is of excellent standard. Fresh fruit salad, Kellogs Cereals in a pack (none of this cheap open stuff you often get in cheap hotels), good quality teas and coffees. You also get a free newspaper. And best of all it is in a very quiet area only about 10min walk from either Bayswater or Notting Hill Tube Station.

Room Tip: We had a room on the 5th floor and the staff told us that's why we had problems with the shower...

“A bathrobe is an exectutive suite!!!”

I booked this hotel over the phone, firstly being an english speaking country this hotel has minimul people who can speak english properly, I spoke to a Sarah she claims her name is!!! Who for one could not speak english properly and found it very hard to understand anthing that was said by her, i was on the phone for a minimum for 40 minutes trying to book a room before i left for my travels from austrailia. THIS WAS NOT A CHEAP PHONE CALL, the longest i have ever spoke to someone regarding booking a room. I booked an executive room for arounf £180.00 per night, as this was the "cheapest rate" they could offer me over christmas!!!!!!!!
When i arrived at the hotel i thought it was a hostel!!! the pictures on the website are very misleading!!!
The girls on reception were very scruffly dressed am sure most of 3* hotels have a dress code of smart office wear not jeans and shirts with caridgans not very proffessional, however i was checked in by a girl called selay who was very friendly and welcoming big change from the previous experince on the phone i had, it was a shame she could pay full attention as she had to help her collegue who was checking in another couple, as they could not understand what she was saying to them!!!
After checking in i got in to the smallest and slowest lift to the 4th floor, i was expecting a very nice room being an executive room and paying the rates i was,
THE ROOM WAS THE MOST ROOM DOWN ROOM old funiture with the sink the bedroom it was worse than a hostel...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The next morning i went down for breakfast after the worst night sleep ever, I was greeted very well and served by a very nice gentleman (indian i think looks around 30s) I was given my full english breakfast wich i enjoyed the gentleman spoke to me asking about our stay etc, and he knew i was not happy, and told me he would try his hardest to make it better and offered if i wanted to change room, he made the transition for my room move without any fuss which was brilliant and would like to thank his for all the help during my stay!!!
The second room i went too was alot better but the creakly floor boards still didnt help me or my partner sleep .

The only good thing about this hotel is the location as it is close to everything and easy to get back to.

I would never stay here again, not at that price there are alot nicer hotels in the area
TRY AND BOOK ANOTHER HOTEL IN THE AREA!!!

“Best to find somewhere else!”

This hotel is in a good area and in easy walking distance to Bayswater station. The really small room was simply awful - down a flight of (dirty) carpeted stairs, broken window, handbasin awkwardly placed in room, written instructions not to leave food unsealed! Dreadful smell (dead rat?) in passage and lift area. Staff were helpful but not friendly and access to the internet is expensive. Avoid laundry down the road or make sure they rinse clothes well! Found Pret a Manger in the main street for breakfast - free wifi, wonderful hot porridge and honey: see [--]
