“Surprising Reviews - Terrible Room / Shower.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Having read this is the Corus flagship I had high expectations but frankly the hotel was something of a disappointment. The room rate was not cheap and hence I was not expecting to have to be as forgiving as the hotel demanded. The room was tiny, with a double bed (with mattress cover) pushed right up against the sash window from which there was a cold draught which kept me up on the first night. The desk arrangement was quite good although the chair was terrible - looked like a decorators chair that had been left behind, tatty, damaged and paint marks all over the plastic cover. Worst of all was the shower, I am not tall but it was a nightmare to get into the shower (no bath) and once in there was hardly room to move, the height of the shower meant that even I had to bend over in half of the shower as there was no headroom whatsoever - I am amazed that this is even allowed, this can only have scraped through health and safety! There was a notice saying mind your head, it should have said 'don't bother'. The actual shower itself was not that bad, lots of warm water and good pressure but far, far too small and the ceiling height was a joke. The food in the hotel wasn't that bad I may even return for food, but not to stay given this experience...a real disappointment.

Room Tip: Ask for a hotel with a decent sized shower cubicle!

Dear Guest

Thank you for your comments following your recent stay and I am sorry that your experience was below standard in terms of the standards of the room and the shower. The hotel has a continuing programme of maintenance and whilst the building has a mixture of room types with different layouts, I am disappointed that the room standard was not far better and have commenced an investigation into locating the room you stayed in.

I hope that you would consider to stay again when you next visit London and if I can be of any help with a booking please do contact me directly.

Thank you for using Tripadvisor

“City Break Bargain”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Finding London Hotels at realistic prices is always difficult, so the Travelzoo January offer at £89 per room incl breakfast was too good to ignore.

The upgraded room was a good size [unusual in London] but the view was dismal from small windows that we couldn't open. We looked at a Park View alternative, but the window was small and the room not as good, so we stuck with our original.

It took a long time to fathom the heating /air con controls, but we eventually got them to an acceptable copmpromise.

The interior is quite smart. One concierge in particular was very helpful, and the only significant shortcoming was breakfast. One of the waiting staff was in dire need of training, and the hot food was left out too long and eggs were a little rubbery. Not enough to make a fuss, but a little disappointing.

The location is close to the buses and tube [ central line] so quite convenient for shops and attractions.

We would have no problem at going back at that sort of price.

Room Tip: Ask to see them. The reception staff often have little idea as to which has a view etc, and in older...

“Another pleasant stay -”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

My husband and I started staying at this hotel in 1999, after having Russell Square as our headquarters on trips for a number of years. This was a British Airways choice at the time and we decided to try it because of its close proximity to Paddington and Lancaster Gate tubes and it is directly across from the lovely setting of Hyde Park. It was a good experience and we returned several times over the years. The last two trips I have had to make on my own, and there was no doubt I would choose the Corus. The staff has always been very pleasant and helpful for whatever need. Breakfast, which used to be either continental or full English is now just a full English. It is offers a wide and ample variety and is very tasty. Needless to say, the rooms are very clean and comfortable. It is a great choice.

“Great Place”

I stayed with my partner in January, very clean room, great location opposite Hyde Park, very close to Paddington and Oxford Street. Underground station just around the corner. Had a very good bar meal, the breakfast that was included in our rate was excellent.

I found the staff to be very pleasant and friendly. This is a great place to stay for a short city break. I will stay again, for sure.

“Good London hotel”

The hotel is in a great location very close to Lancaster Gate tube station & Hyde Park entrance. We were on a travelzoo deal which was great value for a London hotel. Public areas very attractive and well kept. Room was an upgrade and was perfectly adequate with tea, coffee, trouser press, iron & board, and was clean. Breakfast was delicious, with the best bacon I have ever had in a hotel. Ate early evening meal in olio restaurant, the Malaysian menu was delicious and reasonably priced. Free wifi was an added bonus, why do other hotels rip you off? One word of warning Don't mess with the air conditioning controls, we tried to increase the temperature on the coldest night of the year only to return to the room at midnight to discover it had been blowing cold air all night, we tried every possible combination but could not get any heat so went to bed with socks, gloves etc, good job we weren't on a romantic holiday. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel
