Where to begin, I initially booked the Shaftsbury in Paddington for a surprise birthday weekend for my girlfriend. I chose this location specifically as it was close to many things I had planned over the 2 days. Upon arriving at Paddington we were told that we would be relocated as maintenance was being carried out in our room. Having now read reviews as far back as July 2011 this is clearly some sort of common practice for them to never intend to give you the actual room or hotel you booked for. 3 other people checking in at the same time us had the same problem. A scam to say the least. I was assured that that it would be the same standard of room I had booked for (Double Deluxe) and after waiting 45mins for a cab to take us to the Shaftsbury Kensington we arrived to a basement room with a boarded up window that we couldn’t reach or open so had no natural light, a TV that didn’t work( however was fixed later on), a bed that was a large single if we were lucky, a slamming door, paper thin walls, loud air con, and dim lighting, no hot water for half a morning. The only saving grace was that we didn’t spend much time there and its location close to earls court station. We found the staff uncoordinated and generally unhelpful. One of the clerks looked bemused when I asked her to book a cab and took her 5mins to actually get around to making the call. Would not recommend this hotel to anyone who values a decent night’s sleep and their wallet. Not a 4 star and not worth the hefty price tag. Also we found a cockroach in the batrhhom, enough said i think.
