“Basic, but nice, clean and friendly.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

This is a large hotel, and yes a little dated, dont expect too much, and you will have a great experience. We arrived hours before official check in time, no problem, we were offered a complimentary upgrade to a club suite, which we accepted with thanks, and allowed access to our room immediately, which was great, we offloaded our bags and off we went.
Check in staff were top drawer, other staff were all helpful without exception. We also very happy with the breakfast selection, plenty of choice for everyone ( not all, but most people).
We enjoyed our stay here and will come back again, thanks to all the staff and well done for doing a great job,

Room Tip: The higher the better, quieter with a decent view

“not 4star”

although a deal we had a so called superior double on the 3rd floor. If this room was superior I dread to think what a standard double is like. The fridge (empty so what is the point!) buzzed all night and could not be unplugged and was indeed housed in a GCSE resistant materials standard plywood cupboard, and the kettle was broken. In fact the furniture overall was tired and the mattress sank in the middle. The breakfast was mediocre and I was "told off" for leaving my mobile phone on my table when I went to the breakfast bar. Maybe a bit silly I know but I do not expect to be spoken to in that way. It was ok for the price I paid and tyhe location is brilliant, but I would have been extremely annoyed if I had paid any more.

“Scratch the surface and you find a below average hotel...”

We booked a superior double room using a Hotels.com free night, to be told on arrival that we could only have a twin room unless we paid £45 for an upgrade to a club room. As this upgrade gave us included breakfast (normally £13 each) and Free WiFi (normally £15 extra) it seemed like a good deal... It was not.

It took over an hour to get the WiFi to work, their network refused to allow us to connect telling us we had to contact reception. This was not easy because they repeatedly hung up on us as soon as they picked up without even saying anything. When we could get them to actually take our calls they just kept passing us over to ‘tech support’ who were useless, they just told us to call the reception again as they could see no problems. In the end we had to go down to the lobby and get our connection activated.

The included breakfast was to say the least pathetic, a small selection of cereals a few small bowls of fruit, some ham and cheese slices, a couple of tough bread rolls and some very small pastries. But if you wanted to you could pay £17 extra for a cooked breakfast.

The hotel looks the part on first inspection but a closer look reveals furniture with tired drab fabrics and any wooden parts chipped and scratched, this includes the wardrobes and draws. The bathroom had certainly had its day with signs of mould and damp around the tub and other fittings, the paint was peeling off the door frame and the room had evidently not been decorated for many years.

The ‘Club’ itself is nothing special just an annexed part of the dining area where you can use free internet and get complementary bottled beers for an hour and a half in the evening.

If you are considering staying at this hotel the club rooms are not worth the extra in my opinion, if you get a room high up you should be able to get a decent nights sleep but on the lower floors you may find yourself right above the High Street Kensington tube station which could be a bit noisy. Don’t bother paying for the breakfast; you will get much more for your money at the station which is literally just around the corner.

“Needs Updating”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Major complaint is the quality of the room. The bed had a hole rivaling the Grand Canyon, and the plywood furniture was severely deteriorating. While the room did have a fridge, it was housed in a plywood enclosure that looked like a high school wood shop project. Difficult to find enough outlets for laptop and cell phone chargers. On the plus side, shower was strong and had plenty of hot water. No in room safe, something most good hotels routinely provide. Soundproofing fairly effective at muting train noise nearby. Loud heating ventilation unit failed to keep room from becoming oppressively hot. With locked windows, couldn't get room cool enough. Flatscreen TV was nice touch. Service staff generally helpful. Sent laundry out but it wasn't delivered until they took another credit card impression, odd since they already did so when checking in. Despite being a very frequent international traveler I have not experienced any hotel charging the card in advance for the full stay. As mentioned in other reviews, will see if a large hold remains on my credit card when I return home. That is not common, and is clearly unacceptable.
