“Great location; lovely hotel and great service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Stayed for two nights over weekend in the newly refurbished Buckingham Wing (therefore not sure re rooms elsewhere). Booked online and wanted to check specific arrangments for my and parents rooms in advance so also contacted by telephone.

Both experiences satisfactory and direct contact was the first example of very helpful staff.

On arrival clear that the location is excellent, adjacent to Charing Cross station very central; useful for train and taxis outside. Notwithstanding its busy external location once you enter the hotel the atmosphere is instantly relaxed and quite.

Check in staff very helpful re arrangements (Yvette? sorry think def began with Y). This was also the case when contacting reception with enquiries.

Rooms were very nice and rooms in this wing are across corridor (over street) into slightly separate but not far too away building (basically just down corridor from restaurant, dont wnat this to sound like your somewhere else!) but it does mean it was nice and quiet.

Bathrooms and amenities in rooms generally very good; iron and board / hairdryers etc all in rooms themselves (didnt try minibar). Clearly benefitting from recent re-furb. One, and probably the only issue was that the heating in the rooms (ours and other room) could not cope with what was a cold weekend. Even left on they struggled to reach a particularly comfortable level. In context it wasn't like were sitting in coats but nor really able to take off jumper, and it was very cold outside.

The general areas of the hotel are very welcoming and as has been said elsewhere (both in positive and negative context though I dont understand the latter) of early evening the corridor lighting reduces to more mood feel and floors and stairs are lit with tealights (nb these are battery, sorry to spoil effect but helps to not be worried about H&Safety :-) I personally thought this made moving around a calm and welcoming experience accentuating fact you'd stepped out of the hustle and bustle.

Problem with one electronic key (not unusual) and when popped to reception was sorted but staff also indicated if any further issue to use one of the corridor phones and they'd send someone straight up. Again staff very helpful.

Stayed for evening meal ome night; this is not cheap and wine at lowest end will run I think about £25 is and up. Having said that for London and surroundings the actual food prices aren't exorbitant. Service in restaurant was very good.

Breakfast generally seemed very busy but for all that the service was excellent (thanks to Erkan and all breakfast staff working constantly to serve and clear). Breakfast range itself was good and again service for coffee / tea and toast whilst self serving the rest was great thanks.

Busy at check out but again large hotel, concierge happy to take our keys (pre charged on card so nothing to deal with).

Overall not exactly cheap in price at around £150 ish but you are staying somewhere clearly very welcoming, nicely appointed and in our experience with very good service levels. Very happy with it and (when not going budget) would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Buckingham suite newly re-furbished Executive King has seating area

“Soundproofing needed in this hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

I was initially impressed by the refurbishment of the old Thistle by Guoman hotels but when the guest in the room above me decided to spend the night until 2 am jumping across the room it was a disaster. This is the noisiest room I have ever stayed in. I phoned the Concierge who came up to hear the noise but the person above clearly heard the call and our voices and stopped the noise. Every footstep, the wheels on the desk chair moving across the carpet - and when a door was opened or closed I jumped out of my skin with the noise, even when wearing my wax earplugs. Appalling.

“Great location, excellent service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012 via mobile

This hotel is in a great location for the west end theatres, and is right next to chafing cross station, just across the bridge to the London eye, houses of parliament etc. chech in and out fast efficient. Rooms clean, and well apportioned. Only slight negative minibar is not available unless you order the entire contents at a cost of £65, bu you can always order from the bar to the room, just not as convenient.

“Great Location, some nice touches, we'd stay again.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Bearing in mind we were on a one night special rate we were not disappointed to be tucked away in a side wing and right next to the lift shaft! However, the many other positives made for an enjoyable stay. Guests returning to their rooms were considerate in the corridors (no shouting and laughing like in many Hotels these days) and the triple glazing made for a quiet nights sleep. Location would be difficult to beat for tourist attractions of National Gallery, Covent Garden etc. We did not use a Taxi or Tube over the weekend as we were happy to walk everywhere with ease.

We liked particularly the quality of the bed and linen, fridge, controllable heating/air-con, high spec bathroom with underfloor heating, tealights everywhere in the evening. Hotel receptionist very helpful (Caroline??) Best Hotel in London we have stayed in at this price.

Room Tip: Check out the suite upgrades if you have time.

“Afternoon Tea”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

a bit harsh my review but needed to be said. 8 of us booked at a discount price for afternoon tea. first time and we were quite excited about this. lovely hotel. the sandwiches white bread only, looked a bit uninteresting. cheese paste with cucumber. i had to ask for my pot of coffee to be replaced as too cold. my friend asked for another pot of tea, 3 were left. the waitress said as discount price she should not do this for free but on this occaision she will. i felt there was no need for this comment. the other tables had a 3 tiered cake stand. we had individual plates not so inviting. the lemon tart was gorgeous. the chocolate cakes were plenty. the scones were home made but not enough cream allowed per quantity of scones. would i do afternoon tea again. yes maybe but definately not here.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your comments posted on trip advisor following your recent Afternoon Tea experience.
