“Charming historic hotel in an excellent location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2011

We booked this hotel online while searching for something close to the Covent Garden area. This was our first trip to London and it looked like most of the attractions that we wanted to visit in the evenings, were within walking distance from the hotel. We weren't mistaken.

From the airport, the Picadilly line brought us straight to Russell Square station which is not even a 2 minute walk to the hotel. We booked the shopping package which included full breakfast buffet and a 20pound Harrods shopping card.

The building is absolutely beautiful and staff were very helpful. However, being used to hotels in India, South East Asia, USA, Africa and the Middle East, we were horrified when we first looked into the room. It was so tiny! The bathroom was bigger than the bedroom! The bed was pushed into a corner, so when sharing a bed, one person has to literally jump over the other if they need to wake up at night. However, after subsequent hotel stays in Europe, we realised that the room was a fair size for its location.

Location was wonderful. The train station is next door. the Big Bus stop is less than 3 minute walk. We took an Evan Evans tour to Stonehenge and their pick up location was in a hotel opposite the dining room. The British Museum is less than a 7 minute walk. Kings Cross station is about 12 minutes walk. And the walks are wonderful, around these historic buildings and lovely gardens. We were really lucky on our August trip as it was bright weather throughout.

Breakfast buffet had a huge spread of hot and cold items. tea, coffee and toast is served at your seat. The dining hall is very busy, so you need to mind your belongings as you really can't expect the staff to keep an eye with so much going on.

Plenty of restaurants in the area, we discovered a couple of really lovely Italian family run places that served outstanding food until quite late at night (11pm). There are a couple of 24 hour stores around, if you want to pick up crisps and drinks.

We absolutely loved the hotel and the only reason we did not stay here on our September trip was because we wanted to explore another part of the city.

“No Complaints”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

Stayed here 5 nights traveling on business. Beautiful building and lobby, spacious room. Staff was helpful--all of them....from reception, to concierge, to restaurant, to bar staff. Great location, just steps from tube station at Russell Square. Delicious Turkish food just down about a block on the other side of the street. British Museum is just a couple of blocks and it's free. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 8th floor. There aren't many, but it's worth asking.

“OLD WORLD MEETS MODERN”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

I have stayed in this hotel a couple of years ago and thought at the time it was a nice place to stay. I stayed again a couple of weeks ago with some girlfriends and it seemed REALLY nice this time. I know it has been refurbished and the rooms were very modern, clean and spacious. We only stayed one night and our room was lovely. My friends who had a different room had a wet room for a bathroom AND a dressing room !!! Not bad for a one night stay. We had breakfast in a lovely room done out in marble. The exterior of this hotel is superb very ornate. It is only a 5 minute ride by taxi from St Pancreas and a 15 minute walk on to Oxford Street and 20 minutes walk to Covent Garden. The underground is only a few minutes walk anyway from the hotel. I wil certainly be staying there again. The room rates are good too. All the staff were very friendly and helpful especially Bernard the conscierge.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are bigger

“17th Wedding Anniversary Night Away”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

My husband and I decided on the Hotel Russell as it looked lovely, we were a little dissapointed with the room being very small and the grout in the bathroom seriously needed doing. But we were not going to let it spoil our night away together. We had a lovely meal in a local italian. The following morning we had the hotel breakfast which was not the greatest for what you pay.... Later I noticed that they had taken £250 from our account which we were told by the receptionist would come off our total bill, we then paid our bill which was 208. but instead of putting the original 250 back into our account they took both amounts, and now trying to get the money back is proving to be very difficult. This has left a very sour taste in our mouth. Why should we have to wait for you to pay money back to us when you are quick enough to take it from us?????? Poor........

“Very nice hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

Stayed here on business in the summer, they booked the hotel etc so had no say. Arrived before check in, but they booked my bag in and walked across to the British Museum which was quite interesting.

Arrived back and staff were again very polite, offered to show me to my room (which I refused I had one overnight bag!) Room was spacious (especially for London) was staying alone and strangely was in a twin room, would have prefered a double. Bathroom was decent again for London! Air con was strong which was good for a pretty warm July day!

Had room service in the evening as was working on some papers, food was decent but regretted not making time to eat out as it was very basic. TV in room was a little rubbish, bad reception (how in the centre of London!?)

Had a gorgeous bath in the morning!

Location was reasonable, not far from the tube, a short walk from Euston station and not too far into the livelier districts (russell square tends to be business!)

Was generally really pleased with my night here, though when I saw the price per room thought I probably wouldn't stay here again!
