We were at the hotel for one night - the room was very nicely decorated, clean and had recently been refurbished. The down side to this room was that the multi-jet shower which was absolutely fantastic leaked all over the tiled floor outside the cubicle - meaning mopping up with our towels in order to be safe. You would not want to look too frequently out of the window as the view was grim - very grim. To be fair such an old hotel in a crowded part of the city will not have views to die for! The breakfast table was in the Palm Court which was lovely. Although the buffet 'hot' food was lukewarm - a comment which could apply to every hotel we have stayed in! - the attending staff were very attentive and cheerful.
Afternoon tea - an excellent tea with excellent staff. We would have preferred to be in the Palm Court and not the Grand Salon but that did not detract from a lovely occasion. If you are expecting bone china cups and saucers, silverware, etc. you would be disappointed. Unlike the Ritz the tea is served on crockery which, to my mind, was rather canteenish. Also there was no dress code unlike so many other top hotels - a diminishing standard which is, I suspect, done by the hotel in order not to deter the oversea visitor and the coach trip contingent.
The public seating area at the front of the hotel is not large, nor particularly comfortable. It was difficult to get a seat when busy with coach parties waiting for their respective coaches.
All in all the hotel is a lovely place to stay - it is in the heart of theatreland and centrally located for sightseeing. We would stay again without hesitation.
