“Very good choice - helpful staff, handy location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Stayed for two nights as an HHonors gold member and found the staff extremely helpful and accommodating. It's a less-than-five-minute walk from the Angel tube station, which puts you 3 stops away from Bank in the heart of the City, so this is actually a good choice for people doing business in the square mile but don't want to pay up for lodgings.
Had only one meal on-site - breakfast buffet - which was among the best in town. As to other meals, the area is surrounded with pubs, restaurants of every ethnicity & culture, and fast food options. A lot of young people hanging around in the evenings and a very vibrant feel to the area.

Only one down-side - my room (in the 270's; prefer not to say the exact one) was absurdly cold. I tried to work the thermostat, to no avail, and the space heater provided in the room was inadequate for anything outside a 4 foot radius. So the bathroom floors were frigid and you really need to hunker down under the duvet. I can't help but wonder if the same problem will exist with cooling in the summertime - but not a chance I'd take.

Overall very good however and I will be back. Thanks - especially to the reception staff who were so very helpful.

We really appreciate you taking the time to share your comments with us.

I was very pleased to see you enjoyed your stay and you found our staff very helpful and the location met your needs.

I would like to apologise for the heating issue in your room, I can assure you the heating issue has been resolved. We have also just installed new chillers that will provide very good cooling in summer months.

We look forward to welcome you back in the future.

Kind Regards

“Location is excellent, hotel is standard and affordable, staff nice”

Very close to the underground station "Angel", right on Upper Street makes this a great location in London Islington. Many pubs and restaurants nearby. Antique market and shops right around the corner.
Because it's not in the tourist centre of London it's very affordable (for London standards) we payed 84 pounds a night.
The rooms are a bit old and you to crawl under the desk to find a plug for your lap top, but otherwise the rooms were good and clean.

Tip: buy breakfast vouchers with 30% discount at check in. The breakfast is good!

“Very nice all in all - heating and wifi are issues that can & should be fixed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Pros:

1 General Impression & Amenities - Stayed at this hotel for 3 nights with a group of colleagues. The rooms are obviously new, beautifully designed and comfortable both in size and amenities.
Breakfast was excellent with a big selection of food- including traditional English breakfast, cheeses, hams, eggs, various pastries, soft cheeses, various cereals and some vegetables.
Coffee wasn't very good but that's a problem in the UK in general :O)

2. Location - Before arrival we were worried the location may be a bit far from city center but Upper Street has a lot to offer and the Angel tube stations is just nearby. However, about 3 changes in tube lines are necessary for most trips to central London.

3. Customer Service - Very nice staff and very helpful, had no service problems at all. I'm a new Hilton HHonors member and expected some sort of upgrade or perk and didn't get anything special, but it doesn't deflect from the fact that the staff provided good service, especially Anna the trainee.

Cons -
1. Wi-Fi - Costs 15GPB for 24 hours! That's an outrageous price nowadays, especially in a business hotel for people who WiFi is a must for them. I'm a Boingo.com client so I didn't have to pay and had no problems with the Wi Fi, but my colleagues had no choice and all were quite angry because the Wi FI quality was horrible - making it even worse for paying 15GPB for a bad connection.

2. Heating (there wasn't any in my room No. 275) - Mind you, this was January in London. I was freezing at nights and requested extra blankets because the supposed heating I turned on did nothing but adding room temperature air to the room. I understood from my colleagues they had the same experience. Later on I discovered that during turn over the maids open the windows which brings in cold air and closing the drapes and hiding the windows as a result, which took me a lot of time figure... that's stupid.

3. For some reason, on my last night I noticed the bathroom wasn't cleaned properly, and my mouth wash cup was left dirty (see in pics). Didn't like that very much.

Room Tip: Be prepared to pay for WiFi - 15GPB for 24 hours! That's a lot!! Boingo.com's service saved...

“Great hotel and location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

We stayed here for business as the offices we were visiting were located in the EC1 and EC2 areas of London. The hotel is only about 200 metres from the Angel tube station and the main street (Upper St) is well serviced by several different buses. Breakfast was excellent and the staff friendly. Rooms were well appointed and modern. The A/C in my room was generally cold and I required to wear a robe at all times to avoid freezing. The internet access was a bit slow and quick to disconnect if you were idle for a couple of minutes. Many restaraunts and pubs to select from along Upper Street. If going to an Arsenal game at the Emirates Stadium, you can take buses 4, 19 or 43 heading north. We walked to the ground and it took us about 30 minutes (if you don't include the pub stops along the way). All in all I am happy to stay here and in this loaction for future trips to London.

“Great location for the Business Design Centre!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

My wife & I chose this hotel, for one night, because of its location, as we were attending an event at the Business Design Centre (BDC). For access to the BDC you couldn't be closer, it is literally about 50 feet away!

The hotel and BDC are located approximately a 5-6 minute walk from Angel tube station, on the northern line.

We arrived around an hour early, but we were allowed to check in, without charge. The reception staff were both friendly and efficient.

Our room was a decent size, clean and tidy, with plenty of clean towels and good quality toiletries. The shower was great, but there was a slight lack of hot water pressure to the basin, making it a little slow to fill up. That said, for one night, it wasn't really much of a bother.

The only issue with the room, if I can call it that, was that there was clearly a bit of a problem with condensation around the window. It was quite badly steamed up in the morning, and the wallpaper around the window was a bit discoloured. Again, as this was only one night, it wasn't really a particular problem for us.

We enjoyed a decent meal in the restaurant in the evening, which was the "January special". It was good quality and very reasonably priced. The waiting staff were all attentive and polite, without being overbearing.

Breakfast was very good, ranging from cereal, to continental, to the full English! We both chose the full English, which was good quality and very nice! There was plenty of tea, coffee and orange juice, which was regularly topped up by the waitress.

The areas of the hotel that we saw, reception, lobby, lifts, 3rd floor, bar & restaurant were all clean and well maintained and all the staff we encountered were polite and efficient.

We only experienced one minor "glitch", if I can call it that... at breakfast, there was some confusion as to whether our breakfast had been paid for with the room booking (which was through a 3rd party), which it had. Whilst this did feel a little bit awkward at the head of the line, the Manager told us to go through and have breakfast whilst he investigated and he would come back to us of there was a problem. As we never saw him again, we have to assume that the matter was indeed resolved.

On the whole, I would certainly recommend the hotel, especially for anyone attending an even at the the BDC.
