We stayed at Barkston Gardens from December 16-23, 2011.
Pros:
-Clean
-Very friends, efficient staff. Took care of a minor issue with the room (light bulb needed changing) quickly and without fuss. Were helpful with arranging transportation
-Can’t beat the location: it is literally a block away from Earl’s Court station, between 5-20 minutes from anywhere you want to go in London. We were able to get a lot done in a few days – and still pop back to the hotel to freshen up – by being so close to the tube. Forget trying to stay somewhere “central” – in my view, there is no such thing in London. Stay close to the Tube and you’ll be glad you did.
-There is M&S and a few cafes/grocery stores nearby to grab a quick, cheap bite. There is also a decent pub right next door. Good way to cut down on food costs if you are budget traveler. And speaking of which ….
-It’s cheap. You really can’t beat the price.
Cons:
-it is under construction/refurbishment at the moment, so don’t count on sleeping in – the noise will not permit. But it was not a big issue. Who wants to sleep in when you’re in London and there’s so much to see?
-the rooms do need refurbishment, and they are, shall we say, quirky? For instance, the floors may slope, and the layout is odd (e.g. our bathroom was as big, if not bigger, than the bedroom).
-the shower is not for anyone with mobility issues – it is about a foot off the floor, with a relatively narrow door, requiring a bit of gymnastics to get in and out of. However, there was a full tub, so it didn’t really matter.
Overall, I would recommend this place. If you want is a clean room with cheery staff in a great location at budget rates, this is a great fit.
