“Close to Earls Court”

We stayed at The Barkston Gardens, booked through Superbreaks. Although there were building works next door it did not affect us. Very friendly staff. Room serviced very well.
Continental breakfast was made more enjoyable by Gus, matre `d very smart with dicky bow!
Very convenient near to the tube and close to pubs and a few shops. We will go back again.

“I keep on returning to this hotel.....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

I already wrote a detailed review few years ago, but it is good to update every now and then.

For it's price, and considering London, this hotel is very good value for money.

On the positive side, rooms are large as opposed to many london hotels where you pay to the same price. Location is very good, just a two minutes walk from the tube. Area offers daily needs within walking distance, including restaurants, pharmacy, stationary, supermarket, photography services and more. Lifts available are now two, before there was only one. Free wi-fi is available throughout the hotel.

On the negative side, breakfast is poor with very limited selection, I always remember it like that and it never improved, so I normally don't have breakfast from the hotel. Bathrooms need to be refurbished, they're old style now. Internet is sometimes slow.

After staying at Barkston for the fourth time, I keep on recommending this hotel.

“The most spacious rooms ever, in London!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

Almost everything about this old works hotel is great. 2 mins away from the Earls Court tube station and even nearer to the bus stop, this is convenience at it's best. A grand lobby with large open windows allowing enough light from the outside. A nice reading lounge beside the lobby on the way to the breakfast hall is well decored in style. As you exit off the lift, the first thing that hits you is a weather update for the day that shows min/ max temps and general conditions... Whether is windy, sunny or else. Thatdetail is worth noting before stepping out for he day.
Rooms were the biggest surprise. I have not seen such spacious rooms in my ten years of visiting London. Breakfast was better than almost anything else in the city I've done.

“Clean room, cheery staff, great location -- and at budget rates”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

We stayed at Barkston Gardens from December 16-23, 2011.

Pros:

-Clean
-Very friends, efficient staff. Took care of a minor issue with the room (light bulb needed changing) quickly and without fuss. Were helpful with arranging transportation
-Can’t beat the location: it is literally a block away from Earl’s Court station, between 5-20 minutes from anywhere you want to go in London. We were able to get a lot done in a few days – and still pop back to the hotel to freshen up – by being so close to the tube. Forget trying to stay somewhere “central” – in my view, there is no such thing in London. Stay close to the Tube and you’ll be glad you did.
-There is M&S and a few cafes/grocery stores nearby to grab a quick, cheap bite. There is also a decent pub right next door. Good way to cut down on food costs if you are budget traveler. And speaking of which ….
-It’s cheap. You really can’t beat the price.

Cons:

-it is under construction/refurbishment at the moment, so don’t count on sleeping in – the noise will not permit. But it was not a big issue. Who wants to sleep in when you’re in London and there’s so much to see?
-the rooms do need refurbishment, and they are, shall we say, quirky? For instance, the floors may slope, and the layout is odd (e.g. our bathroom was as big, if not bigger, than the bedroom).
-the shower is not for anyone with mobility issues – it is about a foot off the floor, with a relatively narrow door, requiring a bit of gymnastics to get in and out of. However, there was a full tub, so it didn’t really matter.

Overall, I would recommend this place. If you want is a clean room with cheery staff in a great location at budget rates, this is a great fit.
