“Left after 1 night”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I stayed in December 2011. Booked two nights. Left after one night. Shocked by the standards attributed to a so called 4 star hotel. Its no way a 4 star. 2-3 stars at most. Decor from the 70's. Chipped baths, threadbare carpets. Stale smell in the room. The hotel agreed to refund my second nights stay but the booking agency did not. Would never use them again.

The staff however were great and the only redeeming feature.

Room Tip: Dont do it. Just dont.

“Disappointing verging on dangerous”

I had stayed here in October 2010 for one night and had no qualms about returning 3rd February 2012. The location is perfect but my stay was not. I was allocated room 301 which was a nightmare - no bedside table which also meant no bedside phone or lamp. No heat in the bathroom and bedroom heat only improved by addition of a dimplex which had to be moved to open doors and drawers.
Moved to room 308 which was marginally better because bed was in different position.Still very cold room, gale from window right beside bed,no heat in bathroom and only a trickle of hot water.
Nowhere safe to plug in kettle - had to unplug dimplex and have kettle on floor.
Staff pleasant and helpful but no manager available. Neither of these rooms were safe and certainly not worth £101pn(room only). A most disappointing and upsetting experience.

“3 not 4 star, but redeeming features”

I stayed here on business and the location was chosen primarily on distance from work and price. It's very well situated and easy to find being right next to the natural history museum.

on arrival I was offered a complimentary drink which after an eight hour trip was very welcome, although it probably would have been better for them to bring this to your room as I felt a bit awkward standing in reception while the receptionist and the bellboy waited for me. They carried my luggage down to the basement room which was very small and involved the bellboy putting my case on the bed and us shuffling round each other as there wasn't really enough room for me to have followed him in.

The decor was chintzy, but the bed was comfortable enough, there's a floodlight on the building right outside the window so the curtains stayed tight closed.

Nice toiletries in the bathroom and a sewing kit which is always handy. I didn't have breakfast so can't comment as it seemed a bit pricey when there's dozens of cafes right outside.

All in all not bad, more of a three star than four but well priced and good central location.

Room Tip: avoid the basement!

“A nice place to stay”

The Gainsborough Hotel is perfectly located within London's inner city for a holiday. It's only minutes walk from the South Kensington tube station. And is literally across the road from The Natural History Museum.
We were impressed with the facilities at the hotel. Our room was larger than expected and very comfortable. The breakfast in the morning was also very good. Staff were very friendly and helpful all the time when we needed something.

We were more than satisfied with our stay.

“Good location, great price...all what you need”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

It was the second time I visited London and this hotel was far better than the other one I stayed for a similar price a few years ago.
I was looking for a nice, clean, comfortable and convenient hotel and this was it. About a 2min walk to the South Kensington tube station.
I was a bit concerned about the club mentioned on the reviews on Trip Advisor but once I got there, the management ensured me that the club had been closed down once for all, so we had a very pleasant night.
The service was very friendly. I didn't have the UK outlet, so the receptionist lent me their adapter when I needed it. Room was small but clean, the bathroom was OK.
The breakfast was the usual English breakfast; they made it upon order so it was really fresh.
I know that London is very expensive compared to other European cities so it is hard to find a good hotel for GBP 100 per night.
Overall, I was very pleased with the Gainsborough Hotel and would definately recommend it to my firends.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room on the 1st floor as they are the best..
