We treated ourselves to a London trip for our wedding anniversary, so we went over our usual B&B budget. I was wondering whether it would be worth it, but it was very good. From the initial phone call to book the room, to the last day when we returned to the hotel late early evening to retrieve our luggage, the staff were very professional, exceedingly helpful and friendly without being gushing.
When we arrived we asked for a room upgrade and were given one, probably because it was our 25th wedding anniversary. So even though we'd changed rooms and were also early, the room was ready in 10 minutes and it was much appreciated.
The room was lovely, clean and with toiletries and bathrobes in the lovely bathroom, free bottled water and some chocs in the fridge. We faced the roof of the nearby Sainsbury's, which had a car park, but it wasn't a problem and not close. Road noise was minimal as it's set back from the very busy Cromwell Road, and heavy well fitted curtains helped to screen the noise through the single glazed windows.
Really comfortable bed, feather quilt and pillows, nice and snuggly.
The hotel is very well maintained, no scruffy bits that I could see. We went in Ruby's for a 'happy hour' drink, but because there was no-one else there, it didn't have any atmosphere. It was also a bit chilly and the dark decoration just made it feel a bit gloomy, when all it needed was a few more people. Well maybe it would be better decorated similar to the lounge area actually, looks more inviting.
Breakfast was very good. You don't need a cooked breakfast because there is more than enough nice things in the continental - fresh rolls, lovely pastries, sliced meats and cheese, cereals, fresh fruit salad. We did have a cooked breakfast as I can't resist having someone else cook it for me and the scrambled eggs were perfect - I'm very fussy about my eggs not being overcooked - good quality sausage and bacon and all very well presented.
(I always find that people who stay in hotels are not as chatty as the ones that stay in B&B's, perhaps they are all focused on doing their own thing or too rich to bother with other people. Perhaps that's why some reviewers find hotel staff unfriendly cos they can't be bothered to talk to them)
Location is great, really handy for all the main tourist stuff by tube, and the museums are just 'round the corner' 15 mins walk. I recommend going inside the houses of parliament - go in the evening and there's no queues. Fantastic if, like me, you've never been and have no idea what it looks like inside. No chance of Da Vinci tickets unless you're in the queue at 6am.
The Stanhope arms has a good atmosphere and meals which are ok but not amazingly cheap (£11 for rump steak and chips) but nice beer. Lots of italian restaurants around - we tried the Ask Italian, only because it had people in it (on a Monday evening) when the others had no-one in. It was OK. Take a walk to the Earls Court Road if you want to see more 'real' life.
We would definitely go back if we went to London again.
Room Tip: Try a room on the front, may be really quiet.
