After reading the reviews and looking on the hotel's website I really wanted to like this hotel, but unfortunately it didn't really do it for me.
On checking into the hotel I was told that I had been upgraded to one of their apartments. I'm generally happy to receive upgrades, but I was a little disappointed to get to the apartment and find that - instead of the deluxe boutique hotel room I had been expecting - it was basically a flat. This would have been great had I been staying for a longer period or travelling with family, but as a single traveller staying for one night, I prefer a hotel room. Unfortunately, as I was a little short on time I wasn't able to see if the room could be changed.
Plus points - the staff were generally friendly and the food in the Londinium restaurant was very good. I also liked that, for the deal I had, I could have room service breakfast for just the additional cover charge; as the apartment wasn't in the main building, this was a lot more convenient. The apartment itself was also spacious with a very comfortable bed and would have been fantastic for a family. Although I didn't use it, the kitchen seemed well-equipped and for a large group / long weekend it would be easy to self-cater (particularly given the proximity to Borough Market). The choice of magazines in the apartment was a nice touch - including a couple of new issues of magazines I normally buy. Also, the elements of the package I booked were all included and on the bill - one of the few times recently I haven't had to query this with hotels.
Negatives - the room itself seemed very 'lived in' and one of the chairs was quite badly stained / soiled. There were a couple of examples where more attention to detail would have been helpful. The television in the lounge didn't work (I thought at first it was due to the remote control not having batteries, but changing the batteries over didn't make a difference), I couldn't have the lights on in the kitchen as the under-cabinet light kept flickering so I couldn't make a cup of tea and the water pressure in the shower was quite poor. The housekeeping staff hadn't cleared the previous occupants' room service tray from outside the door when I first got there, and my breakfast came with the toast I had ordered but no butter.
The other thing that the hotel is really suffering from at the moment is its location. I haven't marked the hotel down for this, as it's not really within its control, but I was unable to get a full night's sleep due to very loud music going on from a local bar until 1.30am and then building work starting at around 7am. I know the location, so realised that it was never going to be somewhere to stay if absolute peace and quiet was required, but even if you can ignore the music you're likely to be woken up early.
Would I stay here again? Probably not - my stay was reasonable but for the amount I paid, I can stay in a hotel that I like more. I certainly wouldn't stay in the London Bridge area through choice until the building work was complete.
Room Tip: Higher floors on the other side of the building to the Shard may have less street noise
