“Pleasantly suprised”

My daughter and I stayed in City Continental at the weekend. I booked it after looking at the photos but when I read the reviews I was dreading the trip. I must say I cannot complain - I did ask to be put in a 'nice room' and receptionist did change us (dont know if we would have been this lucky if I had not asked!) Room was decent size, very clean and comfy beds. I think they are near the end of the renovations so we were not disturbed by workmen. We were lower ground but we did have a window which we could open. There was scaffolding outside but never saw anyone out there in the 2 days we were there. The breakfast was fine - again did not expect too much but everything was okay. For £30 each per night in Central London on a weekend I found this hotel perfectly adequate in terms of cleanliness and comfort.

“I didn't enjoy my stay here - only plus was location”

+ The only plus as I said - the location. It's just a couple of minutes from Earl's Court tube station *

- This hotel is average at best. It/s very calstrophobic. The elevator, the single room, the double room, the staircase all felt terribly small and closing in.

- Wifi costs 2GBP, that's a lot. It didn't work for me and I called reception and told them to cancel it right as I figured out it doesn't work, they agreed. On checkout they "forgot" they agreed and still wanted to charge me for it.

- This was a business trip, and I had to sleep in a single room and then a double room with a colleague. I switched three rooms in less than a week - although we asked for it, they refused to let us stay in the same double room!!! That biggest trouble with that was that..

- The elevator doesn't reach 4th floor, so we had to carry our heavy bags in the steep, spiral and crackling staircase from 3rd floor to the 4th - hotel staff didn't offer any help. It was quite scary.

* During my stay, the elevators at Earl's Court tube station didn't work, so I had to carry my heavy luggage for 3 floors of the station. This was a heavy lifting trip, if you consider the no elevator thing in the hotel. I came home bruised and hurting.
If this could be a problem for you, check this issue beforehand.

Room Tip: - Wifi costs money - The elevator doesn't reach 4th floor, so we you'll have to carry your...

“Building work”

A friend and I stayed in the City Continental hotel a week before christmas and were greeted by workmen pulling up floor tiles in then reception and the dust was awful, we decided not to let first impressions put us off, so went to our room, which was very clean, apart from the dust which we could constantly taste, myself being an asthma suffer, was short of breath all through the night, my friend who had never suffered any breathing problems was too suffering from the taste of the dust, I think this hotel should have been shut down, whilst renovating was taking place, it is a health hazzard, it would not pass health and safety. In the morning I complained to the receptionist who just walked off, after giving me a bit of scrap paper to write on.

Room Tip: don't book this hotel

“Don't stay here until renovations are complete”

This 3* hotel was booked for us through Superbreaks as part of three-night trip to London. We checked in around 3pm, planning to spend the rest of the afternoon exploring Kensington. Although I did not expect it to be luxurious, I did expect the rooms to be clean. In all I was shown 6 rooms - all of which looked grubby and smelt unpleasant. When I contacted my travel agent I was told that I would require to pay £109 to move that afternoon. As I was unwilling to pay this I chose the best of the rooms I had been shown - although the carpet had stains on it which looked like they might have been cleaned- up vomit! In the morning we accessed the dining room by going out the front door - in the rain - and down through builders' materials to the basement, all guests trailing in cement and mud, and of course getting their trouser hems and footwear stained in the process. The only good points were that the receptionist was a very pleasant girl and the breakfast was what was expected of a 3* hotel.

“Good location, nice staff, bad everything else!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

If you're paying less than about £35 per night, you might be happy with this hotel. Anything more, especially much more, and you'll be very disappointed.

The room I stayed in was tiny; the bathroom particularly so: the toilet seemed wedged between the sink and the wall - unless you're particularly thin, you'll want to 'go' somewhere else!

The staff were pleasant and it's in a good spot - very near the underground station and Earl's Court. But it's still not worth the money.

Perhaps this hotel would appeal to the young backpacker type - but definitely not to business people.
