Location, location, location. The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park is so well located one couldn't ask for better. Not just because you look over one of the most beautiful urban parks in the world but there is a metro stop a few paces away and SO many shops and restaurants within a short walk. Harvey Nichols and their wonderful 5th floor food court is across the street and Harrod's (if you must) is a few blocks away.
What sticks out as the most wonderful part of our stay was the hotel service. It is fully, perhaps overly staffed with the most pleasant and helpful people from housekeeping to room service to concierge. Everyone who works there seems to truly enjoy their job.
On the day of my departure I arrived at Heathrow and could not find my passport. I did not have service on my cell phone and was in a panic as I missed my homebound flight. Through the help of some kind desk agents the hotel was contacted and housekeeping was sent to our room to look for my documents. They found my passport and immediately put it into a London cab and had it whisked to the airport in time for the second and last flight out.
I hope the renovations that will take place for the coming of the Olympics will not drive the cost into the stratosphere of everything else one encounters in London. It was the best value of our entire trip and such a pleasant experience.
Danielle Baloud's restaurant is a pleasant departure from his stuffier New York venues .The interior is beautiful in a contemporary way and the food is casual but delicious.
Having breakfast overlooking the park is so beautiful and on most days one can watch the Queen's Guards practicing on horseback. Charming!
