“Disgraceful service at such an expensive hotel”

I booked this hotel for my wedding night as I had a previous great experience here and we were getting married locally. We paid £300 for one night and the worst service I have ever received. We were really clear that it was our wedding night and that we would be checking in late, that people would be checking our bags in earlier. We provided card details to secure the booking.

When we arrived the receptionist insisted that we provide our card, then and there at midnight. We explained that we had contacted the hotel and they had our card details and that it was our wedding night (I was wearing the dress - we clearly had NOTHING no bags) so everything had been taken to the room already. The receptionist made me stand there while my husband ran up to the room and rooted round to find the right bag and find the card. He then didn't even take payment, he just swipped it! Possibly the least romantic start to a wedding night possible. I understand places have processes but when we had already provided the card details and 2 people had been to drop off our bags, and they KNEW it was our wedding night, you might have expected slicker service.

You might think that it being our wedding night there would be a nice bottle of bubbly waiting in the room, not a chance! The room was nice, all the rooms in this hotel are.

We had pre-ordered a champagne breakfast and been set an expectation that this came with a full bottle of champagne. It didn't, just a half bottle. It wasn't cheap either and quite mediocre.

Oh, and they overcharged us, we had to rush off so then have been trying to sort out retrospectively. I would absolutely warn against booking this hotel if service is important to you. For the amount of money this hotel charges you can get the same boutique, individual charm but without the attitude.

“Poor quality, bad service. Will not return”

My husband and I were very excited to stay at this hotel. We stayed in the "Japanese room" which was described as "one of the larger rooms in the hotel, which has been recently added". Modern and minimalistic were also used by hotel staff to described it. The room is in the basement, next door to the hotel kitchen. To get to the room, one must walk down the stairs, go past the door-less kitchen and you then arrive at the front door of your room. There was a constant smell of food in the corridor. The room was not large, it was average sized so if this is the largest room in the hotel, I hate to think what a small room is like. If you are used to luxury hotels, this hotel is not for you.

We arrived at the hotel in a taxi. There was no one to help us with our bags outside or inside the hotel (we had 3 suitcases and a set of golf clubs). I asked if someone could help us and the women behind the desk looked at me like I was crazy. The staff were not terribly helpful. We went to use the computer in the lobby area because no one could provide us with the password for the wi-fi. The hotel porter/bell person was surfing the Internet !

There are much better places to stay in London. The location is good but value for money and service are terrible. Needless to say, we will not be returning.

“Quirky, different and lovely friendly staff.”

If you are looking for luxury and decadence don't go here, but if you want interesting and different then this is the place.
We stayed in the Japanese room and it was fairly large with a comfortable bed and super bath and shower.
The staff were very helpful and it was a lovely quiet location.
I was disappointed by the breakfast, the croissant was stale, the toast cold and the butter rock hard. However this was my only real complaint.
The hotel is a bit expensive but it is really quirky and I loved my stay here and found it very romantic.

“Colonial decadence in Notting Hill”

We stayed in the Colonial room at the Portobello hotel to celebrate an anniversary. The room was lovely, a really good size, fantastic decadent bed and lovely bathroom with huge victorian bath, with all its original fittings.

Staff were lovely, couldn't have done more to help. I would definitely recommend for anyone wanting a romantic stay somewhere a little out of the ordinary.
