As a birthday treat for my mother, I decided to take her for afternoon tea. Unfortunately, Claridges was booked solid but the helpful receptionist told me they could book their sister hotel, The Connaught, for the date and time I needed.
Reviews of afternoon tea here were few and far between (a worry for someone that relies on these things) but I went with it thinking it would be as good as Claridges. How wrong could I be.... Now I'm not saying it was awful but the service was slow. Very slow. I asked for a round of sandwiches without an item on the menu and was told 10 minutes. No problem. 45 minutes later the sandwiches turned up...toasted and nothing like we had asked for. Not wanting to ruin my mothers treat by complaining, we all tried to eat the toasted delights!
Milk arrived for my tea in a dirty milk jug, cream arrived in a dirty jug for my mother also. My napkin was dirty and when I asked for more jam for the scones I got a withering look followed by another 15 minute wait! The jam - whilst we're on this subject, I must cover this off - Oh, the jam. It really is incredibly good when you do manage to get more than a tablespoon out of the tight waiter. So good I picked up two pots on my way out. Now I don't know how much you might think is normal to pay for 2 x 220g pots of jam but, for me, it isn't £22.50. I should add I have just got back from Paris and seen them in a posh deparment store there priced at half that! Beware the expensive jam.
Anyway, sandwiches were good and refilled when I requested it and pushed for some more. Cakes were incredibly good as were the beautiful warm scones. I must say I preferred The Dorchester for afternoon tea - much more polite and quicker service as well as no withering looks when requesting more of anything. This was nice enough but it wasn't 'special' and I think that really is what afternoon tea should be.
