“Would not recommend this hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

I stayed at this hotel for one night and got very little sleep as it is single glazed and next to a very busy road. In addition to that the room was tiny and the bed was very uncomfortable. To top it all off I realised when I got back they had charged me twice. When I called them they did not apologise and said I had to send them bank statements to prove it. I am still waiting to be refunded.

Our hotel is situated on Essex Road near a bus stop. We have recently converted all windows to be double glazing in order to reduce the outside noise and are looking at further ways to reduce this further.

“Absolutely stank of cigarettes !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

I asked for a non smoking room and was given a room which stank of cigarettes, not just a little-bit It was a really strong smell. The window wouldn't shut and i could hear the traffic from the busy essex road outside. I asked to change rooms but all that was available was a single room. They insisted on still charging me full rate for a double room. The new room also reeked of cigarettes but was quieter being at the back of the hotel. The door to both rooms had a gap at the bottom. The hotel was very noisy- I could hear the guys above me urinating. The bed in the second room was covered in black hairs. If it hadn't been so late I would have found somewhere else .

Our hotel is strictly non-smoking and besides all the signs advising of this we have suitable smoke alarms throughout. It seems a previous guest thought it was ok to smoke out of the room window. We took action as soon as we were notified and offered the guest an alternative room at no extra cost.

“Horrendous”

I travel a lot for work so know that hotels can vary incredibly, however this hotel was a huge shock.
My wife checked in on her own as she was attending a course in the nearby business center and I was to join her when I flew into London the next day. She was given a tiny, dirty, dark and claustrophobic room which had intermittent electricity, clumps of hair on the floor, blue shower gel oozing down the walls of the shower and a mouse trap just outside the bedroom door. Not a great first impression.
She complained and was told that the mouse trap was normal, that the room would be cleaned (which it wasn't) and despite any of this, it was the only free room in the hotel so there was no other choice.
She reluctantly stayed the night (and avoided using the shower or lacking electricity) as it was a late check-in and she had little other option.
The next day I arrived and went directly to the hotel, hoping it would have been cleaned as promised to my wife but of course this was not the case. Despite my protest about the lack of cleanliness, my wife's complaints and the poor state of the room I too was told that there were no other free rooms.
I pushed a little harder and was then shown to a vacant room which had suddenly become available (very questionable) - this room I was shown was as per the pictures on their website and was like stepping into a different hotel. I told the staff that I would accept that room to which the reply was that it would be charged at a higher room rate per night!!
I decided at this point that this was enough and I decided that checking out immediately would be the only option.
We checked into the Hilton in Kensington for only 10 pounds more per night (110 GBP via lastminute.com) and got the excellent service I was expecting.

Simply put, avoid this hotel at all cost!

Room Tip: Avoid this hotel

This guest had booked a double room but we were unable to give her a canopy bed so we offered a 50% discount (£37.50 per night) which was accepted. Our cleaners did clean the room every day and issues were rectified before 2pm. In light of all this we did offer them another double room for the standard price.

“Barely acceptable”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

The location is good, free local parking after 1.30 on a Saturday and all of Sunday, 24 hour reception.

The photos on the website do not reflect the reality of the rooms which are finished to a very low standard. A tiny, dark room with see through gauze for curtains, no table and not even adequate lighting for putting on make-up. No bin in the bathroom. To top it off the boiler broke and nobody informed us as we came in that there was no hot water. The light in the bathroom was hanging out of the ceiling and when the handy man came to mend it he just jammed it in the space and did not fix it safely.

To be fair when we spoke to the manager on check-out he gave us a discount for our inconvenience and offered us a free night which we declined. If you have a low expectations this might be your kind of place but we wouldn't stay again.

“Good Basic Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

Situated in Islington, this is a small, good, basic, clean and reasonably priced hotel. Rooms are small, but good enough for an overnight stay. Shower not brilliant, and window would not open. Includes breakfast. Indian restaurant serves reasonably priced food and wine, and food is good.
