My partner and I stayed at the Mayfair Court apartments the week of 11 December 2011. We had a one bedroom on the first floor (i.e. the one above ground level) and found that it was we expected: a bit small but still way better than a hotel. So yes, while it was a bit on the small side (can think of as cozy - one could reach the sink and brush teeth while sitting on the toilet at the same time!) it was clean, with a sufficiently stocked kitchen (we just need a few plates, cups, and pans -- we don't expect it to look like the kitchen at home!), comfortable living/sitting area and a comfortable bed and bedroom. While there wasn't much room to spare, it was definitely big enough for the two of us to be in comfortably. (there was enough space to open doors, etc) There was a flat-screen TV in the sitting area, a two person table (in same area), a random excess space off the kitchen that we used to store our luggage, and enough heat that was easy to regulate. The check in and out was quite simple, and it was easy to find. The location is fantastic (we wanted to be in town, in case the tube stopped working on the weekends, as is normal!) and overall it was a good option.
The one serious caveat was the exceptionally noisy sewage truck that idled directly next to our bedroom window from 5:30am to 11:30pm every day we were there. The truck was performing public works ordered by the council (aka. city) so there really wasn't much we could fault the apartments for this, but it still was a gigantic inconvenience, especially since we were on holiday and wanted to sleep! The apartment management was courteous and tried to be helpful when we called them to compain about it (they went to speak to the truck driver, offered to move us to their property in Notting Hill, etc) but as we didn't want to move, there was nothing to be done. There was also some loud garbage-pick up related noise on the street every night around 2am(which is a short street that primarily serves as the "back-door" alley way for businesses on Oxford Street (the other side of the block). Its safe, no worries, just noisy.
In short, if you are traveling with only two people, prefer location over spacious accommodations and can tolerate normal-to-high levels of "urban noise pollution", then this is a great place to be. Otherwise, I suggest to look for a place that isn't immediately off a main street like Oxford and doesn't face what is an urban alley way.
