“poor value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

this was our first visit to the childwall abbey hotel and sadly it looks like the last.
we went for sunday as it is handy to where we live and the weather being unreliable of late
my partner had chicken pasta and didnt enjoy it at all as it was overdone with spices.
i had wiltshire ham eggs chips but the chips were barely warm.
a point i would normally have ignored was i had to return to the bar for soda in my partners wine which had been asked for. but this on top of everything else all added to it.
the abbey is such a lovely old building with so much history it really does deserve to be redecorated with some taste and meals of a quality to match its character, instead it could have been any old plastic food greasy spoon you find on any motorway services

Room Tip: we visited on a really cold day and sat near to the bar. find a room away from the doors the room w...

“nice but unorganised”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

its in a nice setting in a nice village type of place. we found it to be unorganised. room was ok but not brilliant, carpet didn't look as though it had been hoovered and it was just a bit shabby. food was beautiful but you had to wait a long time for it. easy to find and parking with free car park. if your looking for immaculate rooms then this isn't for you, if you want good home cooked food in a quiet area then this is for you

“Good place but due for a refurb.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

We stayed here on a friday night and had a great time. Landlord offered us a complimentary night after an overbooking situation two weeks previous when we had to return home!
Anyhow we all make mistakes and perhaps its the response afterwards that's important.
Quite impressed with the Marston's formula. It certainly beats Wetherspoons.
We decided to eat here rather than flogging in to town. Nice also being able to park outside. Its obviously a really good locals pub with a real cross section of ages and types. The beer is good and the wine reasonably priced. We had two steaks, starters and a pudding with wine and drinks for £45. The food was excellent value.
The room was clean and better than a boring formula Travelodge. Lovely bed, nice linen and decent bathroom but only a big shower not a bath. Also quite secure which is important for a Liverpool pub! We had room 2 with a view over the bowling green.
The breakfast was really good also and quite well presented but a limited choice perhaps as opposed to posh hotels. There was however fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereal etc. The full english was just that. It was well cooked with decent quality ingredients.
The place could do with a real spruce up but it is a pub of character. We were students up the road at Christ's College 30 years previous and it has retained much of its uniqueness from then so well done Marstons. The landlord Brian fell over himself to look after us and all the staff were friendly and helpful.
Pub does a good trade so this is always a good sign. We will return at some stage. Nice setting opposite the church and nice being able to park with no hassle.
We will probably return as paying guests.

Room Tip: ask for one with a view.

Only stayed for 1 night as we were visiting friends, but found this hotel to be excellent. Ate in the pub on saturday night, and the food was fab, our room was comfortable and clean, and the cooked breakfast was also excellent.

“Cosy old fashioned pub with clean modern rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 March 2011

We stayed here to visit friends who were only a short distance away so the location was great for us although if you wanted to visit central Liverpool this may not be ideal. The rooms were not massive but big enough with a good bed and a mixture of period and modern fittings. The bathroom was good with a massive shower and lots of hot water (some hotels think a good shower is a luxury). The pub seemed friendly and the food looked good. The breakfast was a standard full english type that was quite greasy and with not great quality ingrdients but plenty of cereal and toast. Overall good value for money.
