We stayed here on a friday night and had a great time. Landlord offered us a complimentary night after an overbooking situation two weeks previous when we had to return home!
Anyhow we all make mistakes and perhaps its the response afterwards that's important.
Quite impressed with the Marston's formula. It certainly beats Wetherspoons.
We decided to eat here rather than flogging in to town. Nice also being able to park outside. Its obviously a really good locals pub with a real cross section of ages and types. The beer is good and the wine reasonably priced. We had two steaks, starters and a pudding with wine and drinks for £45. The food was excellent value.
The room was clean and better than a boring formula Travelodge. Lovely bed, nice linen and decent bathroom but only a big shower not a bath. Also quite secure which is important for a Liverpool pub! We had room 2 with a view over the bowling green.
The breakfast was really good also and quite well presented but a limited choice perhaps as opposed to posh hotels. There was however fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereal etc. The full english was just that. It was well cooked with decent quality ingredients.
The place could do with a real spruce up but it is a pub of character. We were students up the road at Christ's College 30 years previous and it has retained much of its uniqueness from then so well done Marstons. The landlord Brian fell over himself to look after us and all the staff were friendly and helpful.
Pub does a good trade so this is always a good sign. We will return at some stage. Nice setting opposite the church and nice being able to park with no hassle.
We will probably return as paying guests.
Room Tip: ask for one with a view.
