My wife booked an overnight stay here 21st January as a birthday treat for me, paying £99.10 for a double room with breakfasts.
We arrived by car and parked on St John's multi storey car park as advised on the Holiday Inn website. The walk to the hotel is depressing - down the car park stairwell, through a tunnel, down some more steps. Its a bit of a trek and quite a dingy first impression, and the outside of the hotel was litter strewn.
Check in was simple and quick and off we went up the lift to the sixth floor.
The impression on leaving the lift was not good, the corridor carpet was rucked along its entire length and was patched up with black tape.
We stayed in room 620, a non smoking room, and the first thing we noticed on entering was the smell - stale urine coming from the bathroom - not something you would expect in any hotel of any standard anywhere. The sealant around the bath was black and mouldy in places, and between the floor and walls it was discoloured and yellow. There was also a slot in the side wall of the marble effect sink unit for dispensing tissues, but the tissue box was empty.
The bedroom also felt cold, the area around the window was extremely draughty (in fairness the winds that day were very strong) however it was then that I noticed the state of the lace curtains. They were full of burn holes and yellow nicotine stains where previous guests had clearly been smoking out of the window.
I started to look around a little further and saw that one of the switches for the bedside lamps was cracked and the electrical flex was coming away from it so that the brown, blue and green/yellow cores were showing.
As an electrician I know how potentially dangerous this could be.
We were feeling a litle depressed by now, and thought about asking for another room, but quite frankly we felt that the problem was with the standard of maintenance and cleaning and that this this was highly unlikely to be better in other rooms. We felt that we had not done enough research and had chosen a bad hotel. My wife was more depressed than me, feeling that she had let me down.
On a positive note the breakfast was good, with a choice of cereal, fruit, cooked breakfast, toast etc. and the restaurant staff were very polite and attentive.
On checking out we were asked "was everything OK with your stay?".
It was at this point that I told the receptionist that we were very disappointed with the room, and told her why. She said that we should have complained and she would have had us moved to another room but I told her what I have already said here "we felt that the problem was with the standard of maintenance and cleaning and that this this was highly unlikely to be better in other rooms". She wrote down my complaints onto a yellow post-it note and said she will pass them onto the management.
My advice to anyone thinking of staying here is simple - DON'T. We certainly won't.

Dear 'Kevandpat',
