“The over rated Old Bakery”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2011

Several months ago we read a newspaper review for The Old Bakery and we have wanted to try it ever since. I have to say we were very disappointed.

As per the last on line post, we too booked directly from the web site.
Initially I called to book for dinner but there was no answer. I then sent a text requesting a table but again had no reply. From the on line site we could only book for lunch on the Friday as dinner was booked out for the entire weekend. I received both a confirmation email and text message.

After a lovely morning wandering around Lincoln we arrived at The Old Bakery to find it closed. I called the restaurant for an explanation only to be told I must have had the wrong web site. No, there is only one Old Bakery and I have a confirmation email and text. I was made to feel it was my fault.
No decent apology given just some half hearted explanation that they were having problems with the on line booking service and they did have a table free tonight. We reluctantly agreed to try but with reservations. Not off to a good start.

The restaurant was nice enough. We did have an apology of sorts mid way through our meal but no form of compensation for the inconvenience. To also find out that my initial text reservation had been received but no one had bothered to let me know only made the experience more frustrating.

Anyway, we ordered and hoped the quality of the food would go some way towards redeeming the restaurant even if customer service was poor. We ordered steak and lamb shank and both were reasonable, but no better than you would get in an average gastropub. Unfortunately, the meals didn't carry pub prices but rather premium dining, and by that measure they were definitely lacking.

Do yourself a favour and book somewhere else; Brown's Pie Shop, Thai Chiang Mai, or The Wig and Mitre pub were all good value and the food was better than the Old Bakery. So thumbs down from us...

“No room at the Inn”

I would love to be able to write a lengthy and glowing review but sadly having booked directly on The Old Bakehouse website the night before, we were asked to confirm our name twice by a bemused staff member. They had no reservation for us despite us having received a confirmatory email. When the chef arrived at reception, he was asked if he knew anything about our booking and said only that he had booked other guests into our room (top floor with private bathroom) 2 nights before and that they had been having problems with the online booking system. They were able to offer us a twin room (with the beds "pushed together") instead which we reluctantly agreed to look at.
The room was very small and dated, I would say a throwback to the 80's at best, with the only redeeming feature being the open fireplace. The 2 single pine-framed beds were either side of the fireplace and I fail to see how they could have been pushed together to create a double. The other furniture was a mishmash, cheap and dated, with nothing matching. Our private bathroom over the landing looked as though it was even older and certainly did nothing to lighten my heart.
With imagination and investment these rooms could be transformed into boutique style accomodation and would complement the delightful feeling that the restaurant offers.
Needless to say we decided that the room wasn't for us and we trundled back home to spend the night comfortably in our own cosy double bed after spending some time in Lincoln.
My hope now is that our account is not debited for the booking that the Old Bakehouse was unable to honour.
Having read the reviews of the food I would happily book a table to experience dining here but would certainly look to stay elsewhere. However, if you simply want an inexpensive, no-frills bed to lay your weary head after eating here, it may be right for you.

“Superb food, but service for non-regulars leaves something to be desired”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2010

I have been to the Old Bakery several times and the food is 5* quality - absolutely superb. The attention to detail is profound: even the bread is homemade, and you can guarantee that everything will be top quality. It's not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for and Sunday lunch - £17.50 for three courses - is especially reasonable. The building itself is beautiful and full of character, although having never stayed overnight I can't comment on the rooms. My only criticism is that Alan, the owner, isn't always friendly towards non-regulars and several of my friends have felt that they were looked down upon and were not accommodated in the way that regulars are: as a regular, I echo this and it's a shame, because if you are a regular the experience is fantastic: the chef Ivanno usually comes over for a chat, Alan is very dry and witty, and you might occasionally get free extras. However, there is nothing worse for anyone than an unwelcoming atmosphere and it is this that prevents me from giving it 5* overall; other than that, the food is to die for and it's probably the best cuisine in Lincoln.

“An real gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2010

We had a number of recommendations for the Old Bakery and having finally visited it ourselves have to agree. It's a real gem - exquisite food, knowledgeable, friendly and professional service (ie just the right amount of attention). Rooms not luxurious, but more than adequate, as we went for the dining experience and for a bit of sightseeing in Lincoln, it was fine. We had the 7 course taster menu - which was put together with some great wines. Would love to sample more of the menu as it all looked good. The food is well presented, creative and extremely flavoursome. Well worth a visit and highly recommended.

“FANTASTIC FOOD AND STAY”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2010

I dont know what planet some of the previous reviewers are on or what place they stayed but it certainly wasnt the Old Bakery at Lincoln.
I stayed there with my wife last week for one night and a meal in the evening, the room was certainly OK with everything we required. It was en-suite, overlooked the road out front but was not at all noisy.
The meal was excellent, the service was superb, and we couldnt fault it in any way.
This time last year we had dinner in the Ritz in London and the meal we had in the Old Bakery was of similar quality and service.
The breakfast was also superb with all local produce, there was more toast and coffee if you wanted it.
If in Lincoln again I would not hesitate to stay there again
