Several months ago we read a newspaper review for The Old Bakery and we have wanted to try it ever since. I have to say we were very disappointed.
As per the last on line post, we too booked directly from the web site.
Initially I called to book for dinner but there was no answer. I then sent a text requesting a table but again had no reply. From the on line site we could only book for lunch on the Friday as dinner was booked out for the entire weekend. I received both a confirmation email and text message.
After a lovely morning wandering around Lincoln we arrived at The Old Bakery to find it closed. I called the restaurant for an explanation only to be told I must have had the wrong web site. No, there is only one Old Bakery and I have a confirmation email and text. I was made to feel it was my fault.
No decent apology given just some half hearted explanation that they were having problems with the on line booking service and they did have a table free tonight. We reluctantly agreed to try but with reservations. Not off to a good start.
The restaurant was nice enough. We did have an apology of sorts mid way through our meal but no form of compensation for the inconvenience. To also find out that my initial text reservation had been received but no one had bothered to let me know only made the experience more frustrating.
Anyway, we ordered and hoped the quality of the food would go some way towards redeeming the restaurant even if customer service was poor. We ordered steak and lamb shank and both were reasonable, but no better than you would get in an average gastropub. Unfortunately, the meals didn't carry pub prices but rather premium dining, and by that measure they were definitely lacking.
Do yourself a favour and book somewhere else; Brown's Pie Shop, Thai Chiang Mai, or The Wig and Mitre pub were all good value and the food was better than the Old Bakery. So thumbs down from us...
