“I would not stay again if it was the last place on earth.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2011

Me and my partner went to the Merginn on a weekend away based on the great reviews the guest house has recieved.
The reviews were not a good reflection on the experience we had.
On arrival at the guest house we were greeted by the male owner and sat in the lounge to fill out our details. We were then shown to our room which we were told was the last room. The room was on the 3rd floor and was not the ensuite I booked. We had to use a communal bathroom in which the shower did not work well and went cold every 2 minutes when you were trying to shower. The most annoying factor was that we kept walking past a vacant room which was much bigger and nicer than ours.
The ceiling of the room was very low and my partner hit his head getting out of bed.
Breakfast was simply a joke! We were told to be down at 9.30 PROMPT! which we were and then we were sat for 15 minutes. My partners breakfast then arrived and was not what he had ordered. The lady owner then came out and gave another table one breakfast and took my partners food and gave it to the other table saying the breakfast was not his. We then heard the male owner complaining about the breakfast being taken away saying my partner should have just kept it and eaten it. OUR breakfasts then came out and were luke warm and not really nice they tasted slightly metalic which was strange.
We then checked out as soon as possible and gave our keys to the male owner who simply said thanks please write a comment in the guest book. Needless to say we did not write a comment.
The lady owner then called me and left a message appologising for our stay however they did nothing to rectify the numerous problems during our stay.
I feel that we were slightly discriminated against due to us being a younger couple and were put in a room that we would accept due to our age and the better rooms were given to older couples who 'deserve more respect'.
I would not reccomend this guesthouse to my worst enemy due to the way we were treated.

Room Tip: Be an older guest

In response to the negative review above - we can only respond to guests problems when we are told about them during their stay. There was no mention at any point of any shower issues or that you felt you had been given the wrong room. The booking was made on-line and was for a standard room with shared facilities - your comfirmation note will support this fact.
The room booked was on the 2nd floor (we only have 2 floors) and the room that was vacant at the point of their arrival was booked by other guests who had simply just not arrived at the B & B at that point and didn't until 8pm.
With regards to the breakfast - yes I did make a mistake with one of the plates. One piece of black pudding on his plate that he hadn't ordered was the only item wrong. The comment about my husband saying that "why can't he just eat it" was actually made by another guest and not by him. I said sorry a few times, but once a mistake has been made there is no going back - the other guest that I had confused you with laughed it off, and thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast. (No excuse but - I had received some terrible news about a family bereavement and my mind was elsewhere - understandably)
We would never discriminate on anyone's age be they 18 or 81! We have had many guests aged from both ends of the spectrum. We are naturally hurt that you should feel this way!!!!! We always try to give our best as our other reviews show, and we feel that this review is not a fair reflection on our property & services!

“Excellent value for money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 April 2011

Just returned from a very enjoyable stay at the Merginn. Location is ideal - just off the promenade but quiet enough to get a peaceful nights sleep. Steve is a lovely bloke - even offered to buy vegetarian sausages and cook my hash brown seperate from the meat. Room was a very good size and had everything you could need. Parking was a bonus. Couldnt of asked for more, especially given the competitive rates. Would definately stay again x

“Lovely place, friendly people”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 April 2011

Stayed here for a couple of nights at the end of the February half term holiday, with 2 children, one age 8 and one age 2. Last minute decision to stay but this didnt seem to cause any problems at all. Really friendly people, on arrival we were offered a cuppa, which you dont get everywhere. En-suite family room was at the back of the hotel, with plenty of space, not cramped.
Given a choice for breakfast, which we were asked about on arrival. Breakfasts were good too, given a choice of cereals, and juices, toast came to the table as well as either the tea or coffee.
On-street parking, which wasnt too much of a problem given the time of the year; the hotel does have some parking at the back, which would probably be advisable if staying peak season/illuminations. Good location away from all the "noise" very close to the prom for a leisurely walk into town for the amusements and shopping centre.

“Thanks for a lovely stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2010

We only stayed a couple of nights (wish it was more!) and we got a friendly welcome and even got offered a brew when we got there and had a chat with Steve in the lounge for a bit. We were shown our rooms before payment was requested which is always a good thing! The room we had was a double en-suite which was modernly decorated and clean. Clean towels and bed linen were provided each day. Breakfast was good, plenty of cereals to choose from. English breakfast wasn't swimming in grease which was great!

Will definetly recommend to anyone we know heading down to Blackpool in the future.

P.S: Thanks to Steve for reversing my car out when we were leaving!
