I visited the Holmsdale in early September 2011 with my partner. We booked a superior room which was reasonably sized with a small (narrow) en-suite. The room was very clean and comfortable if a little bit twee. Liked the complimentary drinks tray with biscuits, nice touch. Flat screen TV and wireless in the room, but we didn't use either so can't really comment. Comfortable bed, and the shower was fine.
Breakfasts are to be recommended. Someone commented that they couldn't understand why the owners need to know your breakfast order the night before, but it wouldn't be viable to provide for every eventuality with a relatively small clientele, so they need to cater accordingly. Not a problem for us, and the meals were hot, plentiful, tasty, and served with a smile and offers of more tea/coffee/toast. I believe they also do evening meals but we'd opted to eat out.
Good location close to the railway station and down a side street from the promenade. Bit of a walk to Central Pier, but that didn't worry us. Bus/tram stop nearby, so that's an option if preferred.
We had a key to the front door and the room itself, so were free to come and go as we pleased. There's also a small bar in the lounge, although we were never back in time to take advantage of it.
The couple who own the guest house (and another lady we saw who obviously worked there) are nice people who have a gorgeous little dog who will either leave you alone or be friendly depending on whether you approach him.
All in all a good weekend break.
