Seven members of our family (4 adults, 3 children aged 12, 6 and 2) visited The Sefton for a 2 night break, staying in two family rooms. Our party all agreed that with a little TLC, some serious deep cleaning and maybe some investment in the decor this would be a fab little hotel. Even the front of house could do with a bit of attention as the garden furniture looked rotted and 'kerb appeal' was sadly lacking. I've just put our observations here but all in all we had a good stay but did not enjoy the lingering aroma which even came home with us as it was on our clothes as we unpacked.
Good points: the hosts were very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about amenities in the area. The breakfast was very nice with plently of toast, tea & coffee. The hotel states it has a bar, which it did, but did not seem to have any stock for it. When we asked for wine, the lady said she would go out and buy some; we just supplied our own which they were fine with. The hotel is a fair bit away from the main attractions but there is a tram stop at the top of the road and it only cost £10.50 for all seven of us to the Pleasure Beach/Sandcastle.
Bad points: as you enter the hotel for the first time upon your arrival you are greeted with a strange smell, a mix of nicotine, dust and dog. This is noticeable throughout the hotel. One of the family rooms looked out onto the yard at the back of the property and each morning I had to close the window as the cigarette smoke from below permeated our room above.
The en-suite facilities were adequate, the shower looked quite new and therefore operated really well plus we had nice white fluffy towels. Family members in the other room had almost threadbare towels and flannels with stains on.
The bedding was clean but the bed had seen better days, creaked every time you moved on it. During the night you would radiate to the dip in the middle, so we didn't get a good night's sleep. On the whole our room could have done with a clean, there was a film of dust over most things and the carpet looked very dirty with many stains, especially leading from the bed toward the toilet (?!?!)
DON'T bother visiting The Gynn Pub on the roundabout as it is a dump. Families are herded into a gated area, none of the kiddies attractions were working, all over the place were signs saying 'Out of Order'. Also the language from some of the staff as they conversed with 'regulars' was quite foul. Uncle Tom's Cabin (around the corner from the hotel) is another to avoid as this was full of men smoking (no regard for legislation here), not very comfortable; definately NOT the place to take young children.
I hope the owners take the criticisims constructively as this could be a really nice place to stay if the standards of cleanliness and guest comfort was prioritised.
