“Sad, sad, sad!”

We were greeted with "you are a day late". We weren't but that didn't seem to matter to this owner. We proved that we hadn't made a mistake but there was no apology. The front door was Mortice-locked, which we had to on entering and leaving each time, which did not seem very welcoming, even though the handle on the outside was falling off. Was this an attempt to make guests responsible for hotel security? There were four dog bones, a dog toy and a yapping/barking dog in the hall - there is no reception desk. Also the dog is allowed to lie on the seats in the residents' lounge covering the common areas and seats with dog hairs! Our room had the dirtiest carpet we have ever had in an hotel, corners didn't get cleaned and the bedside lamp was covered in cobwebs and dust. To say it was an hotel was wrong - a B&B would have been nearer the mark and then we wouldn't have chosen it. It is something out of the 1970s with low maintenance, damp patch on the ceiling and very worn paint. Although the owner tried to be friendly and helpful, he just didn't manage it - the whole place is sad, sad, sad.
In it's favour is the breakfast. The food is good, the choice is good and the service is quick.
However, breakfast alone cannot offset all the negatives. An experience we do not wish to repeat.

“Stay here at your pearl”

WARNING - Do not stay here if you value your health and well being. Apon arrival we were greeted by an overwelming smell of rotten dogs and stale smoke. There was a dog waiting to greet us which was freindly but stinking. The room had black damp in the seiling, there was a rotten smell of excrement coming from the toilet as they have shredder toilets, something i have not come across nor want to ever again. The bed had a huge dip in it making it very uncomfortable. Apon waking up we headed down stairs to recieve our breakfast only to be served it with added dog hair in it. This was the final straw. i packed our bags and proceeded to check out as fast as we could, On check out the owner did not seem 1 bit surpirised that we were checking out 2 days early and did not even ask why, they surely must experience this quite alot. After leaving i passed by sometime later only to hear another guest outside on the phone saying how disgusted she was with the place. This is by far the worst hotel i have stayed in within the UK and frankly should be shut down immediately.

Room Tip: Do not stay here!

“Great hotel, all you need for a BnB”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2011

I stayed in the double room with my friend as we went for a Hen do. The room was a decent size, clean, warm and with an en suite bathroom. The breakfast was lovely, I had the cooked breakfast everything you need after a night out. The owners were very welcoming on arrival and when we left in the morning. I would recommend the hotel as it has everything you need and it was good value for money. My only let down was that our window didn't close properly and the seagulls are noisy in the morning! Other than that a great hotel.

“Excellent service! This is where we will stay everytime we go to Blackpool :)”

Excellent service, lovely couple. As soon as we walked in we noticed the fresh, clean smell. When we arrived Dennis (Hotel owner) welcomed us in at the door and took our bags to our room. A night key is available if you want to go out for the evening, even while the owners are in bed! Nice en-suite bathroom and coloured television. Comfy beds, tea + coffee facilities in your room, very tasty full english breakfast. Lovely view from bedroom window aswell.

Room Tip: Front rooms have great views of the beach and sea.

“A shame basic standards let it down”

Seven members of our family (4 adults, 3 children aged 12, 6 and 2) visited The Sefton for a 2 night break, staying in two family rooms. Our party all agreed that with a little TLC, some serious deep cleaning and maybe some investment in the decor this would be a fab little hotel. Even the front of house could do with a bit of attention as the garden furniture looked rotted and 'kerb appeal' was sadly lacking. I've just put our observations here but all in all we had a good stay but did not enjoy the lingering aroma which even came home with us as it was on our clothes as we unpacked.
Good points: the hosts were very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about amenities in the area. The breakfast was very nice with plently of toast, tea & coffee. The hotel states it has a bar, which it did, but did not seem to have any stock for it. When we asked for wine, the lady said she would go out and buy some; we just supplied our own which they were fine with. The hotel is a fair bit away from the main attractions but there is a tram stop at the top of the road and it only cost £10.50 for all seven of us to the Pleasure Beach/Sandcastle.
Bad points: as you enter the hotel for the first time upon your arrival you are greeted with a strange smell, a mix of nicotine, dust and dog. This is noticeable throughout the hotel. One of the family rooms looked out onto the yard at the back of the property and each morning I had to close the window as the cigarette smoke from below permeated our room above.
The en-suite facilities were adequate, the shower looked quite new and therefore operated really well plus we had nice white fluffy towels. Family members in the other room had almost threadbare towels and flannels with stains on.
The bedding was clean but the bed had seen better days, creaked every time you moved on it. During the night you would radiate to the dip in the middle, so we didn't get a good night's sleep. On the whole our room could have done with a clean, there was a film of dust over most things and the carpet looked very dirty with many stains, especially leading from the bed toward the toilet (?!?!)
DON'T bother visiting The Gynn Pub on the roundabout as it is a dump. Families are herded into a gated area, none of the kiddies attractions were working, all over the place were signs saying 'Out of Order'. Also the language from some of the staff as they conversed with 'regulars' was quite foul. Uncle Tom's Cabin (around the corner from the hotel) is another to avoid as this was full of men smoking (no regard for legislation here), not very comfortable; definately NOT the place to take young children.

I hope the owners take the criticisims constructively as this could be a really nice place to stay if the standards of cleanliness and guest comfort was prioritised.
