My partner and I had booked a double room for two nights, arrived and were stuck right at the top of the hotel with a fire glass window. It was dark and dingey and the only other window was in the bathroom, bit opened about 2 inches before it hit a drainpipe. The final straw was when using the shower the sliding door fell in on me. We went down 4 floors to reception where we were given another key to "try". Back up 4 floors, collect all our things, go to new room and find a single bed. Back down to reception where we are told it's a 3 quarter size bed adequate for 2 people. My partner is 6"5, so this was a joke. After a bit of arguing backwards and forwards over whether they could charge us for a double room and expect us to sleep top and tail, the manager finally gave us the keys to a family room, which was ok. It could have been a room at the London Savoy by this point, we were already considering booking into a Travelodge down the road. The hotel continued to disappoint for the rest of our stay, particularly the poor breakfast offering. It is a crying shame that such a beautiful building which must be steeped in history is run in such a shabby manner, surely it deserves better.
(we did formally complain to the hotel later, and received as compensation a free night's stay, at the Savoy. We are yet to cash it in)
