Just back from a 2 day, one night stay at Storrs Hall a hotel I last visited almost 30 years ago! On arrival, I had to say I was just a little disappointed as I thought the hotel looked a little tired and in need of some tender loving care.
We had booked a good deal through one of the offer sites which was a 2 night break but I'd spoken to the hotel the week before to say unfortunately we could now only stay for one due to a family funeral. I didn't ask and neither did I expect any refund for only spending one night there.
Our room was tiny. Really tiny - Only just enough room to get around the bed. The bed wasn't even a standard double - it was a three quarter bed and being used to a king size, it wasn't the most comfortable night at all. The bathroom was a good size but again was a little tired with a rather tatty, stained carpet. On a positive note, while the bedroom furniture was a bit bashed and worn, the furnishings were nice. We had a small window which overlooked a leaf strewn roof and a small amount of car park - incredibly disappointing.
Having dropped our bags, we went for a walk down to the lake and around the gardens and I then I realised just how special this hotel was to my parents - it is the rather faded grandeur of the gorgeous house itself and the truly stunning position.
It was a cold and damp late afternoon but we sat on the iron bench in the garden and looked out on the lake which was deserted. It was like having our own private lake.
Returning to the hotel - we found the bar ... and what a fabulous bar it is. Roaring fire, proper old fashioned bar which you'd expect to find in a Dublin pub and comfy cosy seats. And there we stayed for a very comfortable hour or so.
We had booked dinner in the restaurant at 8pm and really weren't prepared for the superb quality of the food. We have eaten in many fine hotels and restaurants and the meal was right up there in the top 5. Not cheap at over £100 (which included a bottle of wine) but exceptional. The tables were beautifully set, the service was excellent and all in all, a fabulous meal. From there we strolled back to the bar to have tea, coffee and home made sweet temptations and to enjoy the roaring open fire.
Breakfast was as fabulous as the evening meal with the added bonus of a table overlooking the lake ... and for that position, along with the excellent breakfast, I think it's probably the most memorable breakfast I've ever had. I didn't want to leave our table - I could have sat there all day.
So after a rather shakey start, this lovely old hotel won us over well and truly.
Without doubt we will be back again very soon but will book a lake view room with some more space and a proper sized bed!
We met many members of staff during our short stay and without exception. - they were a delight. Fred, who looked after us for breakfast was a joy - id have loved to have chatted to him far more than we were able to.
