“Fabulous retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

My mother and I stayed at Gilpin for two nights for my 40th birthday, in Haystacks, one of the Garden suites. Our stay was perfect, from start to finish. Every member of staff was friendly, helpful and nothing was too much trouble (right down to digging Mum's Mini out of the sudden snowfall and driving it down the steep drive for her!)
The room was luxurious, spotlessly clean and had every possible amenity. The restaurant was excellent, with local sourced fresh produce cooked to perfection. The passion of the sommelier, Ziggy, made for an entertaining and informative meal each night.
Gilpin Lodge is a truly great small hotel, luxurious, but relaxed and welcoming.

“Afternoon Tea”

Having previously used this hotel we thought we would try the afternnon tea which provied rather a disapointment especially in view of the price. The main lounge area is comfortable and nicely appointmed and on this occasion we had good service rather than the rather sullen waitress when we last had lunch there. The tea consisted of a small range of sandwiches on poor quality white bread and a slightly better granary, I would have expected a hotel of this standard to produce its own bread. These were followed a an assortment of 5 different variteies of small cakes each together with jam and cream, whilest these were satisfactory in our opinion they were rahter excessive in quantity and perhaps as a suggetion better quality sandiches and reduce the cakes. The tea overall was ok but bearing in mind the high price of £36 for 2 people definitely not worth this price. The experience was also spoilt by a party of 6 guests who were very loud.
