It is always good to re-visit a hotel and find that its standards have not declined overall. This is one such establishment. Over the years it has been a favourite haunt of our family and we recently spent a very brief stay there at half term. We were not disappointed.
The room was spacious enough (even with bunk beds in the seating area) but sadly the furnishings were somewhat tired and the room had not been fully cleaned before our arrival (eg used tissues in the bedside drawers). The superviser needs a lesson in supervising.
On the plus side, it was nice to find cookies for the children and (literally) a few soft drinks in the fridge. The bathroom was on the small side and the toiletries not overly generous.
The spa is excellent and the changing rooms have obviously been upgraded which is much to the credit of the management. The pool is also good for the young ones, if a bit cold.
The real plus point for us was the quality of the food in the evening. The hors d'oeuvres selection is to die for (langoustines included) and the main dishes very tasty indeed.
Sadly when the hotel is busy, the service is a bit hap hazard. We were lucky though and our waitress was unfailingly polite, helpful and again good with the children. Other guests told us of a 45 minute wait for a bar style meal!
Breakfast was a tasty affair but this time round the service was very poor. We had to order coffee twice before it eventually arrived - with an apolgy. Pity as the food was excellent.
All in all good value and an excellent product from Shire Hotels. Perhaps they could try a bit harder on the dining room service to obtain an extra "star"?
