“(Almost) as good as ever”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

It is always good to re-visit a hotel and find that its standards have not declined overall. This is one such establishment. Over the years it has been a favourite haunt of our family and we recently spent a very brief stay there at half term. We were not disappointed.
The room was spacious enough (even with bunk beds in the seating area) but sadly the furnishings were somewhat tired and the room had not been fully cleaned before our arrival (eg used tissues in the bedside drawers). The superviser needs a lesson in supervising.
On the plus side, it was nice to find cookies for the children and (literally) a few soft drinks in the fridge. The bathroom was on the small side and the toiletries not overly generous.
The spa is excellent and the changing rooms have obviously been upgraded which is much to the credit of the management. The pool is also good for the young ones, if a bit cold.
The real plus point for us was the quality of the food in the evening. The hors d'oeuvres selection is to die for (langoustines included) and the main dishes very tasty indeed.
Sadly when the hotel is busy, the service is a bit hap hazard. We were lucky though and our waitress was unfailingly polite, helpful and again good with the children. Other guests told us of a 45 minute wait for a bar style meal!
Breakfast was a tasty affair but this time round the service was very poor. We had to order coffee twice before it eventually arrived - with an apolgy. Pity as the food was excellent.
All in all good value and an excellent product from Shire Hotels. Perhaps they could try a bit harder on the dining room service to obtain an extra "star"?

Thanks for your comments, although I was disappointed to note your feedback on our Restaurant service, which is most unusual. I do hope this does not deter you from visiting again in the near future.

Kind Regards

“Excellent luxurious hotel-don't be put off by the 1960s exterior!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Booked here for valentines break with husband and upon arriving was worried I'd made a bad choice as the exterior of the hotel looked shockingly old fashioned and shabby. However any fears were quickly dissipated as soon as we entered, it seemed like a different
hotel! Beautiful wooden floors and decor, warm, inviting open fires and comfy spacious seating areas, where guests seemed to comfortably lounge over tea and cake, and snuggle up over large glasses of red wine,in a lovely warm welcoming atmosphere. Whilst checking in, a friendly courteous duty manager came to help with our bags and showed us to our room and pointed out the facilities along the way.Our room was clean, comfy and the bathroom was spotless.Lovely clean bedding and comfy bed. The pool and spa were lovely and again spotless and the showers and changing rooms were fabulous. I've been to a few spas and this tops it with cleanliness and facilities. Steam room was gorgeous and the only thing that deterred me from staying longer in the pool area was the noisy kids splashing about but it was half term and I didn't really mind.Dinner and drinks were exquisite and the staff were excellent, friendly and helpful, advising me on a nice red wine to match my beautiful steak.Breakfast was delightful, and we were even offered more coffee and toast well after the hours of breakfast being served.Think parents who bring their kids here need to excersise some discipline ie; NOT letting your kids run up and down the corridors screaming but this is the parents fault, not the hotels. This is a true gem of a place, and other 4* hotel and spas( or at least some that claim to be) that does not match the standard in both staff and everything else in general, need to be ashamed! We will defo comeagain it was fabulous!! Ps only gave room 4 out of 5 as our bed was two twins pushed together but it was fine and for the price of whole weekend Inc dinner and breakfast I can't really grumble!!

“family place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

The communal spaces in this hotel are superb, with big open fires everywhere and comfy sofas. Every staff member unfailingly friendly and courteous It is perfect for families as parents can enjoy the spa facilities while the children are entertained. Food in the restaurant was superb, really good and service was top notch. Again, a request for a room in the quietest part of the hotel failed spectacularly. We were on the third floor, as, so it seemed were every family booked in, so lots of door slamming (it is actually quite hard to close the bedroom doors in this hotel quietly) and kids running up and down the corridor outside. Not for a childless couple looking for a bit of peace. Did not try the spa.

Thank you ever so much for your review.Yes indeed, we do host a great deal of families, especially during school holidays. Outside of these times, inevitably there are fewer families and it is a little quieter, and I do hope you might give this a try.

Kind Regards

“Can't believe its the same hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

my partner and I stayed at this hotel during the summer last year and had a terrible experience, however I am very happy to report that this time this wasn't the case. We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights in January. The staff again were a complete credit to the hotel and I can't express enough how helpful and friendly they are. We were taken to our room by the duty manager, who was really nice and our room was lovely. We stayed in one of the refurbished superior suites and it was lovely, very clean and welcoming. The bathroom was spotless and the bed was very comfortable. We used the gym and pool which were great. Breakfast was lovely and the staff in the restaurant were so lovely and helpful, they really couldn't do enough for us.
I would recommend this hotel to everyone and was delighted with the changes that had taken place in the rooms. The only negative thing about the hotel is the noise of the room doors closing and as we stayed midweek, business people were using the hotel and were up very early.

“Lovely as usual”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

We stayed for the three night new years break. Two years ago we did the break between Christmas and New year. Again it was excellent. We felt so well cared for by rene and all the staff, nothing was too much trouble. The food was delicious, the swimming pool clean and the new years party was a fun family occasion. Thanks!
