“3rd visit, nice room(s!!) but felt a little expensive since our last visit.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

This was our 3rd stay, we were originally reserved room 207 which was a double and single, then we were offered another room nearer the rear of the hotel with better views, as they had had a cancellation because of the snow! We therefore opted for room 214, a double. It was a lovely room, comfy bed, ample tea & coffee etc, the only let down was the bath, there was a shower screen fitted;on the "inside" of the bath rail, which meant you had to bend yourself double to reach the taps/shower control, however, on our first morning, the hot water ran cool, we queried this at reception and the girl brought to our room, the keys for 207, and offered us to use that room to bathe/shower, not ideal, but better than nothing. Breakfast was a very nice selection with efficient staff and excellent service. Outside our room window was the "rat run" from the town square to the car park, which was extremely noisy on the saturday night. Parking was charged at £8 per day/night. Having been inconvenience slightly with the bathroom scenario, £178 for a double room for 2 nights, was a little hard to swallow. We'll perhaps look else where next time.

“Nice room but needs lots of improvements”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

The room was nice, but a little dated. The lights had a dimmer switch, but when switched on the lights dimmed and flickered. Side lamps would not work at all. Was woken up at 6am on Sat morning by people setting up market stalls. An overpriced stay for what we got. Breakfast was average, but the room lacked atmosphere. Advertised as having free wifi, got code and worked temperamentally but no signal at all the next day. Would not recommend, or stay there again ourselves. Disappointing!

Room Tip: If you do stay there, ask for a room at the back rather than facing the main street.

“OK But A Little Tired”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Great location in the Market Sqe.Tidy but but tired deco.Room large but dated, bathroom too small, not even a shelf for toiletries. Staff very friendly and helpful.A tip for the dark haired waiter though-dont sneak and smoke at breakfast and then come back in and serve food,it sticks!
Got the feeling it had been taken over and the staff were just finding their feet.Like another reviewer says it could do with a bit of cash spent on it.

We held our wedding reception here, and all I can say is,the staff made our special day extra special!
From the sit down meal to the night reception everything was dealt with in the most polite and professional manner.
Our room was newly decorated and very comfortable, with a cooked breakfast in the morning being most welcome.

“Could do better!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

I stayed here last September whilst walking the Cumbroa Way. Its handily located in the centre of town right on the route but that's as much as this hotel has to recommend it.

The recpetionist at check-in was a tonic after a long, warm 16 mile walk. However, the check-in paperwork showed a price about £30 more than I'd booked at. Luckily I had a print-out of the relevant email with me and there was no question about honouring the original price. i was enthusiastically told that I'd been upgraded to a double room. I took the lift to the top floor room and, if this was an upgrade, I'd hate to see the lesser rooms! The dated '880's decor I can see past but the bath had stray hairs in it and the over bath shower was basically a shower attachment with very poor pressure. There was extensive staining on the ceiling and wall of the bedroom from a leak. The carpet was ancient and dirty and I was glad that I had flip flops with me to slip into to walk to the bathroom.

I was so tired that I only had the energy to get to the bar for my evening meal. I had an uninspiring shop-bought pie and chips. When the bar man came to lift my plate, I asked for a refill of my drink and was told that he didn't do table service but he'd make an exception for me on this occasion. At this stage, there were only 2 other people in the bar - not exactly rushed off his feet. When I had a stroll out into the square later, I was so disappointed that I didn't eat at the chippy near the hotel. It was a lovely unseasonably warm evening and that would have been veastly preferable to the overpriced, bought-in food in the hotel.

Breakfast was served in a lovely room but was very uninspiring with a poor selection for those of us who don't eat a cooked breakfast.

if you're walking the Cumbria Way there's an excellent, reasonably priced sandwich shop in Station Street right on the route that opens early. Buy your lunch here as there's no where to get refreshments until you get to Calbeck, 16 miles later.

The Queen's Hotel is a big let-down to the lovely town of Keswick and I can't believe that there'd be anywhere less welcoming to stay.
