“Great location, great food, great service.”

First impressions of the Highfield are superb, with uninterupted views of Derwent Water. We received a warm and friendly welcome from the hotel staff who were very proficient and most helpfull throughout our weekend stay. The hotel is very clean and comfortable with a warm and friendly country house feel. The dining room is well laid out with superb views of the lake and the food is excellent, as is the service. Dinner at the Highfield is not to be missed with a mouthwatering selection to choose from. Likewise the breakfast is one of the best we have enjoyed with a menu to match. To summarise, a great location, excellent food and service in a very comfortable and relaxing hotel.

“Googled 'Turret room' Lake District”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2011

...and by pure chance found this superb hotel.
First impressions were of a spotlessly clean, cared for property, nicely decorated, fresh, warm and welcoming.
We stayed in the East Turret which was compact and cosy but enhanced by access to a window seat in the turret which offered glorious views down Derwentwater.
We thoroughly enjoyed every meal - served on stinging hot plates. A good appetite is required but none of it was too rich and use of sauces/dressings was subtle not overpowering. Canapes and a variety of different flavoured breads, together with the sorbets (although sometimes a bit ice-creamy) added a nice touch. Meat/fish was all cooked to perfection and attractively served. The vegetables were also perfectly cooked but a little predictable by the end of the week.
Breakfast had a great choice - both hot and buffet - and the freshly cooked pastries were delicious.
Staff were extremely well trained and friendly.
The setting is perfect - away from the bustle of the town but easy walking distance.
Off now to book again for next year!

Room Tip: East Turrett was very quirky but next time I would choose a larger room on the first floor at the fr...

“Country house comfort with views to die for”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2011

Having stayed once before were looking forward to a comfortable, relaxing 2 night break & we werent disappointed. Typical country house fixtures & fittings in keeping with location. Very comfortable & peaceful- like staying at your rich great aunts house in the country.Room 17 has lovely views over park & distant hills with a glimpse of Derwent water. The new wall mounted flat screen TVs are a welcome space saving addition.
Dinner menu very good but hasnt changed much from 2 years ago.Multi choice breakfast & buffet just a fantastic way to start the day.
All staff excellent, very helpful , uncannily efficient & intuitive, especially the multi tasking Berta.
Minor niggles need a mention as no comments forms available in-house but these did not detract from our overall satisfaction with our stay:- Visible signs of minor wear & tear in the room.
Mould around bath taps & corners of shower enclosure.
Fridge-cold starters at dinner.
'Palate cleansing' sorbet - too sweet & creamy.
Chefs canapes - miniscule & pointless.
Pork & pheasant meats served in curious dry disc shaped slices.

“Another great stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2011

We've been to this hotel a few times now. We've stayed in the Woodford room and cannot recommend this highly enough. The room is fantastic as are the staff and the food. The dining room is very relaxing making the whole dining experience one to be remembered.

“Our second visit, and we'll be back again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

A last minute weekend coinciding with downpours galore, nevertheless the hotel lived up to our expectations from a previous (sunny) stay and a warm and efficient welcome through an excellent dinner and the usual almost perfect breakfast we unwound as planned.

Room Tip: Room 4 - On a sunny afternoon a cup of tea on the balcony is superb
