“Old fashioned and dated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2010

Stayed at the Sonata guest house for 4 days whilst on a business trip to Kendal.

I stayed in a double bedroom, on the first floor. Staircase leading up to it was very steep, which made it difficult to negotiate with a suitcase.

The bedroom itself seemed clean enough, although it was very tired and dated. The wallpaper was stained, and floorboards very creaky.

The shower was extremely noisy, and the plumbing seems to be a problem, as I was woken up in the night by the guest in the room next door to me taking a shower.

There is also an ambulance rank across the road, so sirens can be heard throughout the night.

From what I can gather, pets are welcome at the guest house, and to this end, there does seem to be a "doggy" smell, which was extremely off-putting, especially when eating breakfast.

The only saving grace was the location, which suited me perfectly as I was in Kendal on business.

Overall, not great.

Creaking floor boards? You would creak if you were born in 1850. It's part of the character of the house.
Rooms re-decorated in 2011.
The stairs are of standard construction. I can't understand the grumble about them.

“Great Location, Good Breakfast, Comfy Bed”

We were visiting the Brewery Arts Centre for a gig and wanted a location close by, we were not disappointed, a realistic 5 mins walk to town and 10mins to the Arts Centre. A very accommodating host in the form of Chris who could not have been more helpful. Parking is straightforward close to the guest house (directly outside if you time it right). The bed was comfier than the one we have at home!!, which is a massive plus. We were in room 2 which is at the front of the property and was still quiet, very clean with en-suite shower and bath. Breakfast was really tasty.

“Great location and hospitality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 March 2010

We decided to have a two day break in Kendal whilst visiting a friend that lives about half an hour away. We hadn't actually stayed in Kendal before and really enjoyed it as we were within walking distance of the town centre (about 5 minutes walk) and all of the bars and restaurants.
We received a warm welcome from Chris and Janice when we arrived and were given a double room on the first floor with a lovely bathroom, the rooom had flat screen tv and we had wifi internet access which worked exceptionally well.
The breakfast was lovely-we had the full English both days though there were plenty of other options to choose from-the service was very good and friendly
As we had never visited Kendal before Chris suggested that if we wanted an afternoons drive that we drive out to Grasmere and Keswick, we took his advice and had a lovely afternoon out-the scenery is spectacular.
We also had a trip to the Lakeland Life Museum in Kendal-this is down by the River l and is well worth a visit-as is a stroll down by the riverside
Thankyou Chris and Janice we really enjoyed our stay
Also thank you to the Staff/Owners at the Union pub nearby for their hospitality and sandwiches!-this pub is only about 400 yards away from Sonatas and very reasonably priced

“Fantastic Hospitality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2009

Our stay at The Sonata Guesthouse was very enjoyable. the guest house is idealy situated on a quiet street away from kendal town centre and only a bus ride to Windermere.

The hospitality here from the owners is charming and the breakfast is varied, well presented and tasty - we stayed 3 nights so got to choose different items each day.

Access to teh guesthouse is great, we had a key for the main door and a key to our room. There is a residents lounge and tea/coffee making facilities in the room - super en-suite with power shower and nicely presented room on top floor with breathtaking views of the Kendal countryside - fantastic to wake up to each morning !

The owners were kind enmough to let us keep the main door key on the day of our departure so that we could store our luggage until our afternoon trains - we were very greatful for this as we got to spend one last day shopping in Kendal itself, have travelled all around Kendal during our stay.

If you get the chance, try Deja-Vu restaurant (about 10 mins walk from the guesthouse toward the town centre)

Thanks You Janice & Chris..........and thanks for the Go Lakes rate !!!
