“Mr Sonata and his guest house”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2011

On arrival at The Sonata keys, parking permit and friendly note awaited us. This is a friendly, cosy house and Mr Wilkinson appears to have relinquished his living room for use by his guests, to add to their comfort. He provided help in the shape of a map of the town and recommended places for us to visit..

Our rooms which were on the top floor were spotless, with crisp white sheets on the beds and pleasant views from the windows.. As a previous review mentions, the staircase IS somewhat narrow and steep, but this is an old house and these presented no problem to us at all. The bath and shower room were also immaculate

i am delighted to report that the breakfasts were beautifully and speedily produced with charm and good cheer from our host and were among the best I have tasted ANYWHERE, whether it be a guest house or first class hotel. The menu was varied and even the coffee very acceptable - not often the case in such establishments. Everything on the plates was piping hot, non greasy, well cooked and a pleasure to eat. It certainly held us in good stead for many hours.

I understand that this guest house has been up and running for many years and it must be a difficult task to maintain the high standard which has been achieved. it is my opinion that its four stars are well deserved!. .

Room Tip: if one is seeking a comfortable, well placed guest house within easy reach of town, this is an excel...

“Very comfortable stay in a friendly guest house”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2011

Stayed here for a few days while in the area for work, my wife came too. Very impressed with Kendal as a town, lovely place with some very good restaurants. The Sonata was lovely, very comfortable. Chris was a great owner-very helpful and friendly and not in any way interfering like some small guest house proprietors I have experienced in the past. The room was well furnished and the bed comfortable. I don't understand the criticisms about the staircase and the smell of dogs-I certainly couldn't smell a dog. Our room was at the back where the ambulance station was but didn't really notice any undue noise. Didn't sample the full breakfast, I'm more of a boiled egg man. Seems to be a perfect place to explore the Lake District. I've given it 5 stars, but of course it isn't the Hilton, it's a small family run guest house. For what it is, it is great.

“For a short stay Excellent...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2011

I was on a training course in Kendal and had to find somewhere for the night. A friend of mine recommended the sonata guest house as friendly, Clean and with all mod cons. On Arrival the owner gave me a parking pass for the road in front and provided me with a spare parking spot, The room I was given was on the first floor at the front of the house, A double bed , Separate bathroom and A small room with toilet, Very clean and well presented, New lcd telly and wi-fi connection. All the sheets and towels looked new and the decoration in keeping with the type of house. Breakfast was well cooked and well laid out , In all first class for a small guest house

“Old fashioned and dated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2010

Stayed at the Sonata guest house for 4 days whilst on a business trip to Kendal.

I stayed in a double bedroom, on the first floor. Staircase leading up to it was very steep, which made it difficult to negotiate with a suitcase.

The bedroom itself seemed clean enough, although it was very tired and dated. The wallpaper was stained, and floorboards very creaky.

The shower was extremely noisy, and the plumbing seems to be a problem, as I was woken up in the night by the guest in the room next door to me taking a shower.

There is also an ambulance rank across the road, so sirens can be heard throughout the night.

From what I can gather, pets are welcome at the guest house, and to this end, there does seem to be a "doggy" smell, which was extremely off-putting, especially when eating breakfast.

The only saving grace was the location, which suited me perfectly as I was in Kendal on business.

Overall, not great.

Creaking floor boards? You would creak if you were born in 1850. It's part of the character of the house.
Rooms re-decorated in 2011.
The stairs are of standard construction. I can't understand the grumble about them.

“Great Location, Good Breakfast, Comfy Bed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 April 2010

We were visiting the Brewery Arts Centre for a gig and wanted a location close by, we were not disappointed, a realistic 5 mins walk to town and 10mins to the Arts Centre. A very accommodating host in the form of Chris who could not have been more helpful. Parking is straightforward close to the guest house (directly outside if you time it right). The bed was comfier than the one we have at home!!, which is a massive plus. We were in room 2 which is at the front of the property and was still quiet, very clean with en-suite shower and bath. Breakfast was really tasty.
