“Idyllic location, genuinely welcoming.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2010

The best introduction is to say that all of the other positive reviews of Sawrey Ground are right, and there's not much left to say without being repetitive...about the peaceful location, the excellent breakfasts and afternoon teas and the great surrounds of the Lake District.

What I can add is that Mike and Gill are a very warm and genuinely welcoming couple who are expert in the art of being both attentive and unobtrusive. Mike will chat for as long...or as little...as you like about subjects of little or great importance...or feed you as much...or as little...as you feel you need before striking out for the day's adventures.

As part of an end-of-school trip, I wanted to show my 17-year old son some of the gems of England and we found a treasure trove here. Mike gave us good simple advice on options for walks, places to visit, extra options, what to avoid, and always had a map handy to take for the day if needed. On one miserable, wet day he suggested a day trip to the East Coast, and even rang a friend to see how the weather was there before we committed to a long drive. It was a great day, helped by Mike's map!!

I'm now saving up to take my wife to meet Mike and Gill :-)

“Perfect quiet getaway for a couple or a small group of friends, in every way.”

Sawrey Ground provides the perfect place to stay for bed and breakfast if you are a couple or adults travelling with friends as we were. Mike and Gill are very welcoming and hospitable, and they provide the most delicious homemade cakes (literally made that day in their kitchen) and cups of tea/coffee in front of the open fire when you get back from your day out.

The rooms and en-suites are spotlessly clean, beautifully warm and very comfortable.

I have recommended this B and B to my parents and they have such high expectations that I would rarely have the confidence in a place to do this!

Just perfect.

“A touch of Class”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2010

A most amazing place to stay. It is in idyllic settings and it is the most beautiful cottage. In fact I would love to live in it myself. The hosts are second to none. I look forward to the next time and hope it is soon!!!

“A beautiful and peaceful place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2010

This is a delightful old house. We had a warm welcome plus freshly baked cake and coffee. All rooms very clean and comfortable. The setting close to Tarn Hows is perfect especially for those who enjoy walking. Good choice of food at breakfast.

“Cosy, welcoming. Lovely location. Heartily recommended.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2009

I have visited Sawrey Ground on several occasions over the years and I have at last decided to write a review! I am not sure about the dates when I have stayed so take the listed date with a pinch of salt.

Mike and Gill do a wonderful job of welcoming people and attending to the details that make for a good stay. It can be hard to find a free slot to book a visit as they have many repeat visitors.

Sawrey Ground, a 17th century farmhouse, is ideally situated to explore the southern part of the Lake District and maybe further afield. It is tucked away down a short lane leading from a minor road. One benefit is the immensely relaxing sense of peace and quietness. There are a number of walks from the house including a footpath across some fields and down to the lovely lake called Tarn Hows which is simply stunning in autumn colours.

The house has 3 bedrooms in the main house plus a small cottage attached which would be ideal if on a walking holiday. I have always stayed in the main house and everything is immaculate there. Mike and Gill specialise in attention to detail, and cleanliness is faultless. The perfect hosts they will go well out of their way to make the difference that makes a difference to your stay. Mike has usually cooked breakfast for me on my visits and each time it has been superb. Homemade bread, and delicious looking healthy options or my favourite a full English cooked breakfast is always spot on!

In terms of amenities I haven't used room service or the internet but I am guessing they do the extra to make sure guests are content. Their website says they are in the top 20 of 3000 on the AA's 3000 listed B&B and I am not surprised.

Heartily recommended.
