“Cosy, welcoming. Lovely location. Heartily recommended.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2009

I have visited Sawrey Ground on several occasions over the years and I have at last decided to write a review! I am not sure about the dates when I have stayed so take the listed date with a pinch of salt.

Mike and Gill do a wonderful job of welcoming people and attending to the details that make for a good stay. It can be hard to find a free slot to book a visit as they have many repeat visitors.

Sawrey Ground, a 17th century farmhouse, is ideally situated to explore the southern part of the Lake District and maybe further afield. It is tucked away down a short lane leading from a minor road. One benefit is the immensely relaxing sense of peace and quietness. There are a number of walks from the house including a footpath across some fields and down to the lovely lake called Tarn Hows which is simply stunning in autumn colours.

The house has 3 bedrooms in the main house plus a small cottage attached which would be ideal if on a walking holiday. I have always stayed in the main house and everything is immaculate there. Mike and Gill specialise in attention to detail, and cleanliness is faultless. The perfect hosts they will go well out of their way to make the difference that makes a difference to your stay. Mike has usually cooked breakfast for me on my visits and each time it has been superb. Homemade bread, and delicious looking healthy options or my favourite a full English cooked breakfast is always spot on!

In terms of amenities I haven't used room service or the internet but I am guessing they do the extra to make sure guests are content. Their website says they are in the top 20 of 3000 on the AA's 3000 listed B&B and I am not surprised.

Heartily recommended.

“Shall I keep this little gem to myself????”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2009

We have just returned from our latest visit to Sawrey Ground and I have at last decided to write a review! Like everybody we seem to meet there we are regular visitors who have nothing but praise for the place. Deciding to share this little piece of heaven is difficult - maybe we willl never get in again if it gets more well known!!!

Sawrey Ground is approached down a track and cannot be seen from the road. It is soooo quiet and peaceful you have to go there to believe it. An occasional owl at night is all you hear (husband's snooring excepted.) The house backs on to Forestry Commission land and is effectively on the edge of a wood. A footpath leads from the house across some fields to the beauty spot Tarn Hows. This has to be one of the loveliest spots in the whole of the Lake District- perfect at any time of year but especially beautiful in autumn or on a frosty winter day. It is very popular in summer but being so near to Sawrey Ground you can have walked around before breakfast if you are the energetic type. On one visit we were delighted to see, from our bedroom window, fallow deer wandering in the wood.

The house has, I think, 3 bedrooms. There is also a small cottage attached that is sometimes available for bed and breakfast guests to use. We like to stay here but have stayed in the house too. The steep steps down to the cottage entrance mean it is not suitable for the less mobile. The house, however, just has normal steps to the first floor bedrooms. Sawrey Ground is absolutely beautiful - low ceilings, wooden beams, open fire in the lounge in colder weather etc. Everything is immaculate.

Mike and Gill are the perfect hosts. You will be met with tea and homemade cakes. Breakfast is always a treat- homemade breads, delicious fresh fruit salad, fruit juice, yoghurt, full English cooked breakfast, toast .....The dining room is so lovely you could linger all day. Fortunately the scenery outside beckons or we would never move from the house.

Sawrey Ground is perfectly placed for visiting Hawkshead and Coniston Water, being just a few minutes away by car. Coniston Water is beautiful and much less commercialised than nearby Windermere. You can hire canoes or small powered boats - no speed boats here. The steam launch Gondola leaves from here. Hawkshead is a lovely picturesque village with some nice gift shops.

Our current favourite eating place is The King's Arms pub in Hawkshead village. It gets busy so do book. Their food was all lovely and we went there 3 out of 4 nights. Try their slow cooked lamb.Delicious!

If you are planning a visit to the Lake District and want to be spoilt in tranquil surroundings do consider Sawrey Ground. You will not be disappointed.

“A touch of class”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2008

My four colleagues and I are about to return for the 5th year to this Guest House which is an absolute gem. Mike and Gill are charming hosts with a warm, friendly approach. They greet us with tea and homemade cake on arrival and breakfast certainly has that 'touch of class' with homebaked bread and fresh fruit salad, not to mention the beautifully cooked hot food and interesting preserves.
It goes without saying that the ensuite bedrooms are spotless and comfortable, with tea making facilities tastefully presented.
There are many walks from the house, our favourite being round Tarn Hows. Before dinner we sit in the peaceful garden then we usually drive or take a taxi to the nearby Druncken Duck restaurant . There are also many places to eat in Hawkshead. On the day we leave, we usually have time to visit another part of the Lake District because Sawry Ground is so central which in my opinion, puts it at the 'top of the class'.

“Cosy, friendly B&B”

We received a wonderful friendly welcome from Mike and Gill at this lovely B&B. The rooms are immaculate and comfortable and the breakfasts were delicious. The home made cakes in the quiet and comfy lounge in the afternoons were a nice treat. Would have been great if the room had a shower as well as a bath, but I can't fault it. Sawrey Ground is situated a couple of miles out of Hawkshead Hill and perfect for going for leisurely and long walks. We will definitely go back.

  • Liked — Friendly owners and very clean
  • Disliked — Nothing really, though if pushed I would say it would have been nice to have a shower
