Stayed at this fantastic and remote location over New Year with friends and in a shared room. If you've never been before you're best getting there during daytime as its pitch black in the area and roadsigns to the hostel are poor. You dont really see a a sign for it until you are literally at the gates and could easy miss it!
The hostel is typical of hostels with basic self catering facilities but this is a lovely old manor type house with a courtyard to the side with added accomodation. The main building is in need of some renovation and a bit of TLC. I stayed in one of the courtyard rooms. The room was basic with single bunk beds and was clean n tidy and had a small wash room containing a sink and radiator. Shame really cos if this little corner had been thought through better it could have made for a good little en-suite shower rooml! However, I would recommend some towel rails being put up over the radiator and maybe a shelf or two!
The bed frames themselves were a little grubbye slats particularly underneath the mattresses, but the bedding was all clean.
It would be nice if the rooms had more plug points and a decent full length mirror instead of the plaques on the wall about Beatrix Potter!!
The shared shower cubical although basic was very clean, powerful and the water was lovely and hot!
The breakfast and evenings meals were also not bad value for money and the bar prices are reasonable too - although you're only a stroll away from Hawshead and all the pubs it has to offer!
All round this is fantastic for a no frills getaway for family or friends and the location of the hostel makes it all worth while.
