“Cheap n Cheerful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Stayed at this fantastic and remote location over New Year with friends and in a shared room. If you've never been before you're best getting there during daytime as its pitch black in the area and roadsigns to the hostel are poor. You dont really see a a sign for it until you are literally at the gates and could easy miss it!
The hostel is typical of hostels with basic self catering facilities but this is a lovely old manor type house with a courtyard to the side with added accomodation. The main building is in need of some renovation and a bit of TLC. I stayed in one of the courtyard rooms. The room was basic with single bunk beds and was clean n tidy and had a small wash room containing a sink and radiator. Shame really cos if this little corner had been thought through better it could have made for a good little en-suite shower rooml! However, I would recommend some towel rails being put up over the radiator and maybe a shelf or two!

The bed frames themselves were a little grubbye slats particularly underneath the mattresses, but the bedding was all clean.

It would be nice if the rooms had more plug points and a decent full length mirror instead of the plaques on the wall about Beatrix Potter!!
The shared shower cubical although basic was very clean, powerful and the water was lovely and hot!
The breakfast and evenings meals were also not bad value for money and the bar prices are reasonable too - although you're only a stroll away from Hawshead and all the pubs it has to offer!
All round this is fantastic for a no frills getaway for family or friends and the location of the hostel makes it all worth while.

Thanks for your review, I found your comments very useful and we have addressed some of the issues raised- there is now more signage outside the building and more hooks in the washrooms. I'm glad you apprecaited our lovely location- we feel very proud to live and work here. We hope we will see you again at YHA Hawkshead.

“Great new year”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

Wow there were 77 of us here for the weekend over the new year period and even though we had some very lively children the staff did not get tired of smiling and being nice to everyone, well done. That said as they are aware the building does need a lot of refurb which is such a shame but buildings like this soak money up without anyone realising, but well done to all the staff, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themsleves.

Thank you for you review and apologies for the delay in responding. I'm really pleased that you enjoyed your New Year with us- the staff certainly enjoyed having you all here. We are indeed aware that some work needs doing on the building and we have a schedule to work through. I hope that the staff, atmosphere, catering and drinks more than made up for it and we hope to see you here agian soon

“Almost perfect”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 December 2011

Warm, clean, very friendly & helpful staff. Reasonably priced (£5) cooked breakfast. Strong smell of paint when we got to our room but it soon went. Take a plug bank if you can-charging those gadgets up on one plug is problematic.

Thanks for taking the time to post your review. We have been doing some decorating recently so apologies that the paint smell hadn't quite gone from your room by the time you arrived.
We are glad you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you here again in the future.

“great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2011

I spent a night here during half term with my children. The hostel looked lovely from the outside having been painted since our last visit. Room very spacious with beautiful view over Esthwaite Water and staff were friendly. They keep it as clean as they can but I agree with other reviews that it really does need a refurb inside to have same standard as the other hostels we visited. The self catering kitchen had many hobs out of order and space is limited for storing food for a hostel of that size.

“It's a Youth Hostel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2011

Can't believe some of the reviews here - need a car, run down building etc. It's a Youth Hostel not the Hilton and in a fabulous old building in extensive grounds in a spectacular location. It's only a short walk or couple of minutes bike ride to the village and if you need a car for that you probably shouldn't be Youth Hosteling. Staff were very friendly and helpful, the meals good and great value and the rooms/bathrooms of normal YHA standard. The only real negative was the grubby seats in the Games Room. Thank you to all the staff - front desk and kitchen - for a great stay.
