I'm beginning to doubt that I actually spent last night (20th September) at the Waterside in Grasmere - given some of recent reviews. Myself and 2 friends paid £44 each for a 3 single bed economy room with full breakfast. Before booking, the website advised that the room was in need of some refurbishment and overlooked the road, but given that all we wanted was a room and decent food in the morning after a long walk the previous day, then the price and location seemed fine. I'd read the reviews beforehand, so was suitably warned - and made sure that my friends expectations were managed. The big sign in the car park at the rear - 'staff required' - even added to the foreboding.
What a surprise and delight, therefore, to have our expectations exceeded. Yes, a couple of the comfy sofas in the reception and bar area had seen better days, but most were fine. I even looked for the shabby carpets, but they seemed perfectly acceptable to me. A few rough edges around the place added to the character! There was no view in the room, but I would not expect one for the price. The room was big, quiet and clean. The service from all staff was spot on, and friendly. The breakfast was as I would expect from a decent hotel in a city (the bacon was nice and crispy, and the pot of tea was huge). The gardens were well presented and the morning view over the lake was worth the money alone.
For the price we paid, I can't fault the place - and would recommend it unreservedly.
