“The wrong hotel?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2008

I'm beginning to doubt that I actually spent last night (20th September) at the Waterside in Grasmere - given some of recent reviews. Myself and 2 friends paid £44 each for a 3 single bed economy room with full breakfast. Before booking, the website advised that the room was in need of some refurbishment and overlooked the road, but given that all we wanted was a room and decent food in the morning after a long walk the previous day, then the price and location seemed fine. I'd read the reviews beforehand, so was suitably warned - and made sure that my friends expectations were managed. The big sign in the car park at the rear - 'staff required' - even added to the foreboding.
What a surprise and delight, therefore, to have our expectations exceeded. Yes, a couple of the comfy sofas in the reception and bar area had seen better days, but most were fine. I even looked for the shabby carpets, but they seemed perfectly acceptable to me. A few rough edges around the place added to the character! There was no view in the room, but I would not expect one for the price. The room was big, quiet and clean. The service from all staff was spot on, and friendly. The breakfast was as I would expect from a decent hotel in a city (the bacon was nice and crispy, and the pot of tea was huge). The gardens were well presented and the morning view over the lake was worth the money alone.
For the price we paid, I can't fault the place - and would recommend it unreservedly.

We Arrived on 6th September 2008 at 6.30pm after driving 8 hours from the isle of skye so we was looking forward to a nice relaxing few days but we were in for quite a surprise the hotel should be closed down
Carpets were thread bare as was the furniture the curtains in our room were in tatters the food served
Was no better my wife is a vegetarian her starter for our evening meal was melon I ordered the chicken liver pate when my wife’s melon came we found traces of pate on the melon , pointing this out to the waitress we suggested to her that the melon must of been cut with the same knife as the pate she replied probably .
We booked out the next morning at 10am with a bill of £200.

“Tatty in need of a refurb”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2008

This hotel is desperately in need of updating and needs a good clean as well. Yes the paint is peeling of the front doors which didn't really bother us but there was a big bin/ ashtray which was full of wet soggy cigarette ends. The gardens and planters have been neglected and look an eye sore. There were glasses and beer bottles which were left overnight on the table outside. The double room we had was adequate and we were lucky as we had a lovely view however the bed was pushed up against the wall so we had to climb over each other to get in and out of bed !The bed linen was very clean however there was no valance on the bed so all you could see was the grubby box divan. The towels were clean and changed daily but when we checked into the room the toilet roll hadn't beed replaced from the previous guest ( a pet hate of mine).
The staff were very over worked but were very helpful and friendly. The food was excellent and the dining room was quiet nice but it was hard not to notice the peeling and grubby wallpaper.
Lovely position with great views.
However this hotel is not a cheap and cheerful hotel charging cheap and cheerful prices. It is a run down hotel charging 3 star prices so you do go away feeling a bit short changed.

“Go Somewhere Else!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2008

We were going to stay here to pick our son up from camp at Ambleside. Should have known it was dodgy when we walked in and the front door was propped open by an ashtray with staff fagging it outside.

Reception were distinctly unhelpful. Had booked half board, but nobody had booked a table. Got to room, right next to road, really noisy, shut windows, very smelly bathroom. Asked to be moved. Told there were no rooms (there were, but superior and we hadn't paid the superior tarrif). Menu looked very 70s pub. Two members of staff had a row behind the bar while I waiting for drinks.

Decided to go, and were told we couldn't get a refund, despite having booked 12 hours previously. We did eventually get a refund after kicking up a real stink with our credit card company.

Don't go here, there are loads of places in the Lakes which try really hard to give you a good experience, this is tatty and messy. It's a shame as the location is great, but don't be fooled by the website. Same old story, you get what you pay for, that's why it's cheaper!

“Disappointed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2008

Had booked our stay here using the hotels own website and on the strength of the photos used on the said website. What deception !!! The economy room we booked was clean, but very dark and very old fashioned - funny how one of these rooms doesn't feature on the website. Yes I know it was an economy room but my cat stays in better accommodation. We were really disappointed with our evening meal too. Again the website shows pictures of a lovely room with a good arrangement of tables nicely decorated. What we got were tables arranged in rows and looking more like a school dinner hall than somewhere to have a nice romantic evening meal. And the food wasn't that great either - disappointing main course with undercooked potatoes. On the positive side though the restaurant staff were very efficient. I feel really angry that I was duped into booking our stay at this hotel on the belief that what we saw on the website was what we would get in reality. This was meant to have been a lovely birthday weekend away for my husband and myself - a chance to be on our own which is a rarity when you have kids. The standard of the accommodation really spoilt it for us. The hotel has seen better days and I can't stress enough how deceiving the website is - their pictures make it look more impressive than it actually is. Would I stay here again or recommdend it to others?. No - look elsewhere - we've had better accommodation in the various B&B's in the area for the same price. I can only hope that if more people are honest about this hotel the owners might do something about it.
