We have just returned from a very enjoyable stay at the 'Swan' - admittedly made even better by an unexpected upgrade on arrival! The Silver Howe (one of the feature rooms) was tastefully decorated ( I particularly liked the lovely four poster bed -most elegant!) and definitely in keeping with the character of the hotel. A corner room, it benefited from three windows with excellent views over Grasmere; a large fireplace and a quirky archway through to the dressing area and bathroom (spacious yet really warm). Additionally, the room was scrupulously clean and comfortable as well as being well stocked with tea/coffee/biscuits/water and toiletries, Yes the tiles in the bathroom do need some urgent attention (previous reviews have commented on them) and clearly window frames would benefit from some work too. However, I understand that refurbishment will soon be underway.
The food was of an excellent quality both at breakfast and in the evening. So often these days, a full English looks great but is actually quite bland - at the Swan, it was very tasty! The buffet part was varied and good quality too. The quality of food for the evening meal cannot be faulted - it was delicious - but three small new potatoes with the lamb seemed a little stingy; a couple more wouldn't break the bank. Strangely, there was no issue with portion size at desert; an ample sticky toffee pudding with a gorgeous caramel sauce (taste and texture -spot on).
I have to agree with many other reviewers that the staff are fantastic. From the moment we stepped into the hotel, we were made to feel very welcome. A special thank you to Michelle, Marie, Chris, Colin and Paco who were very professional yet also warm and friendly. You could tell from the way they were with all the guests, that they genuinely cared whether they enjoyed their stay.
The location of course is brilliant, just the shortest of walks into Grasmere itself. It was snowy and rather slippy when we visited so we only made it as far as a couple of original shops and a tea room...however, on previous visits, Grasmere has been great place to pass an enjoyable couple of hours ( me and daughter) while the more adventurous go up a hill (husband and son!).
I have mentioned the 'niggles' as I think it only fair, but in the end, I feel the hotel still deserves an overall 'excellent' - the positives really do outweigh the negatives. Once the refurbishment has taken place, this could really be an outstanding hotel with no drawbacks!
