I arrived at the hotel the day Derrick Ryan unleashed his murderous assault on the people of Cumbria, but the situation at the hotel was completely peaceful. The hotel is owned by the National Trust and leased to HF Holidays, with whom I was staying on a 3 night break. The hotel is set in a very attractive gardens and the public rooms are very impressive featuring copies of many famous paintings. The food varies from reasonable to superb, overall very good. The staff were very helpful and efficient. The bedrooms are clean but rather small. Mine had a single bed, shower, toilet and washbasin. There was no tv. The bathroom was shared between 4 or 5 rooms. I didn't sleep well due to various noises from other rooms-the internal walls don't offer much sound insulation. Free (slowish) internet access is offered from a single PC in a public area. The hotel has a bar with a relatively limited choice of drinks. HF do let rooms on a b&b basis to independent travellers but the majority of rooms were let to people taking their walking holidays.
The hotel is situated in a beautiful part of the Lake District, and is a good choice for a walking holiday. It does lack some facilities which people might expect in a good hotel (e.g. tv) but makes up for this in other ways (nice surroundings, good food and service.
