We hadn't booked, and were looking for somewhere in Coniston which didn't involve any more driving. The Crown offered a twin room with breakfast (no doubles) for £70 which seemed to be the going rack rate at the time. The room was clean but very ordinary and the bathroom was tiny with the dreaded Mira shower dribble (no bath).
The weather was so awful we decided to eat in the bar, and that did little to cheer us up - a very fatty undercooked pork belly and a steak and kidney pie with a raw pastry top. However the vegetables were fresh and cooked properly and came with chips so I thought the pastry was a calorie too far anyway and scraped it off. The waitress was very good about it and offered a complimentary dessert in compensation. Breakfast the next morning was good, with fresh fruit and a well-cooked full English.
I'm probably a bit harsh giving the Crown an "Average" rating, but it was that or "Very Good" and I didn't rate it that highly. The staff were all very polite and cheerful.
