“The Best Place To Stay Ever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

We love staying at the Waterwheel so much we've made in our annual winter break.
Julie and Nigel are the best hosts, making us feel so welcome. Nigel makes the best chocolate cake, which is just what you need when playing cards in their cosy breakfast room on a cold November afternoon!
Breakfast is a treat. The room and the fab bath are hard to beat.
The location is perfect. If it starts to rain when you've set off for an evening in one of the many good places to eat, you can run back to collect an umbrella from the umbrella stand in the hall!
We'll be savouring the thought that we'll be back there again in November.....

5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

stayed this weekend, was a very pleasant weekend with lovely hosts and room and fab breakfast. We will definately return and have come home chilled and rested (well apart form all of the walking and sightseeing). Had a great meal in Matthews Bistro and the Waterwhell is in a fab position and full of character.

Room Tip: saw all of the three rooms on the way out as we were last to check out, they were all lovely so woul...

“Friendly and comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

We stayed at the Waterwheel in September 2011. We loved the central location (but in a quiet little street tucked away from the town centre); Nigel and Julie were really friendly and we felt very comfortable staying in their house! The breakfast was one of the best we had on our holiday. It can be a little tight getting up and down the stairs with luggage, so if you're travelling with lots of stuff, it's not ideal! Also beware if you're on the tall side. The rooms were really comfortable with lovely touches such as a small decanter of port, everything was clean and beautifully maintained. Would definitely recommend to someone looking for a comfortable B&B in a central location.

“everything it promised”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

I booked this as a surprise silver wedding celebration night after researching ambleside b and bs and hotels on Tripadvisor as I find their reviews on the most part a good indicator of what a place is actually like. You obviously have to read a few to gauge consensus, but it has always stood us in good stead.

This was booked as a secret, known to everyone except my wife who was not told of the final destination until we reached the outskirts of the Lakes (where we coincidently stopped for lunch at a pub called ...The Waterwheel!!)

Nigel was in on the subterfuge from the beginning and was also aware of the special occasion and they did us proud. The room (Stockghyll) was perfect and as hosts Nigel and Julie could not have been better. Top notch and thankyou for making our silver wedding so lovely.

“Lovely, homely Ambleside hospitality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011

Nigel and Julie gave us the perfect welcome to Ambleside. Homemade chocolate cake in our room on arrival was a great start and every aspect of our 3 night stay hit the mark.
The Loughrigg room was cosy and spotless with a very comfortable bed. It was lovely waking to the sound of the river outside every morning, before going for a hearty breakfast. Plenty of fresh, local ingredients cooked to perfection.
Our hosts also gave us fantastic tips for walking and eating out. All in all, this b&b was the ideal base for exploring the beautiful Lakes around Windermere.
