Another great stay at the white lion ,thankyou to Graham and his staff for their excellent service ,the quality of the food is of a high standard for a pub,and the cleanliness of the bedrooms are excellent,having stayed here on numerous occasions over the past ten years or so i cannot believe the negative reviews that are given to the lion and its staff,in mine and my wifes opinion, this one of the best places to stay in,having stayed in a number of different hotels and pubs in ambelside.

When we visited the White Lion, my wife had permission from the bar to park my 'blue badged' car, provided I would move it if any hotel resident required the space. So I was surprised when this truculent man stomped through the door shouting to speak to the car's owner' I asked my daughter to move the car, but he continued to shout at her and then he reappeared shouting further abuse. As a witness to the affair suggested, it was an upsetting experience. Over the years we have enjoyed meals at the White Lion, never again. Other reviewers have commented on the poor and unhappy staff; it surprises me that any staff remain. ND Liverpool

I called in just before New Year for some lunch on a day out to Ambleside. I asked for a chicken breast with bacon, Gruyere and a leak sauce.

When it arrived, it looked ok, but as I ate it, the middle/bottom of the whole breast was RAW. It looked like it had been cooked under the grill, but taken off far too early. I had taken a bite of the raw chicken too, without realising it.

I complained discretely to the head waitress. She looked shocked, and immediately took it away to be replaced. I was offered a pint as compensation (only a pint? not a full refund?!?!?).

They did replace my meal too, but in order to make sure the chicken was cooked, the rest of the meal was cremated. There was no follow up to check that the replacement food was ok.

Not acceptable.

Called in for a drink after walking Wansdell fell. Beer OK and food average. However, then the owner (I think) shouted across the room at some people, about how their car was parked. This developed into verbal and physical abuse of these customers, It could have easily been resolved with a quiet word. It spoiled the visit for us, and must have been much worse, for the poor family who had chosen the White Lion, but hadn't parked entirely satisfactorily. We left shortly after these people had been physically thrown out. There are hundred of places to eat & drink in Ambleside, all of which must be a better experience than the White Lion. The owners are in the wong business.
