“Quite literally saved our lives”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

When the snow hit hard and we were in Ambleside, we found we couldn't get back to our accommodation in Coniston. We pulled into the car park of the Cherry Garth in the hope of getting two rooms for the night. The owners were wonderful. They sorted out a room for my parents, and one for my wife, our baby and me. They sorted out a travel cot, extra blankets and allowed us to use their personal kitchen to sort out our baby's bottles. In short, they were wonderful. The rooms were spacious, well-appointed and clean. The beds are particularly comfortable and the bathrooms clean and with strong showers (just what we needed after our day!) Breakfast the next morning was a full English which was prepared to order and a great way to set us for a day trying to get back to our accommodation. They even allowed my wife and mum to stay in our room with the baby while we went to get our stuff from our other accommodation. In short, nothing was too much trouble for them. The location is great - just outside and well within walking distance of the centre of Ambleside (handy for getting baby supplies in the snow - but great for restaurants I would imagine too).
We'll be going back again - only this time we'll be planning to go there!

Room Tip: If you're travelling with children, they have plenty of toys to play with in a toy box on the 1s...

“Great location but not the best B&B for the price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Two very friendly sisters run this b&b and serve a great vegetarian breakfast, but yes our room could certainly do with a revamp not a good look a white toilet seat on a green loo. I have to also say the step up to the bath can be quite dangerous for someone not very tall like my self especially getting out, as the step itself is not quite wide enough for your foot. Had a sneak peak into room 23 and that had been updated and looked really lovely, so check out which room you are allocated first.

Room Tip: Front rooms have fantastic views & room 23 was lovely

“Wonderful again!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

This must have been my 10th visit to Cherry Garth and I love it everytime!

Perfect location, halfway between the lake and the town, so not far to get to many restaurants. Most rooms have views out the front of the house and look towards the Coniston mountains. Absolutley beautiful on a sunny day, and very atmospheric on a cloudy one!

The two sisters who run it are constantly trying to meet everyone's needs. They are very friendly and last year they even came runners up in the AAs Friendliest Landlday of the Year competition! Some rooms are in need of a little decoration but they are always changing things and adding little extras. The house is traditional and so wouldn't suit everything being very modern.

It is perfect for me and has everything I need.

Room Tip: A front facing room to look over the mountains

“Poor quality”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011

The cherry garth is a tired looking shabby b&b. Over priced for the poor level of accommodation. Poor quality furniture and stained cheapish bedding is simply not acceptable for the prices charged. Breakfast good and friendly welcome but this should be taken as a given rather than something to write home about. The owners could do with some professional advice to update and upgrade what has once been a lovely large home central to Ambleside. Could not recommend.

Room Tip: Go to the apple pie b&b which is stunning, clean modern and cheaper!

“Roomy, helpful family-run B&B between lake and town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

Efficient B&B run by a nice family. Clean carpeted rooms dated decor but all services adequate. Easy parking - located about 500m south of Ambleside and about 800m north from steamer pier. Lots of stairs to some rooms so not recommended for bungalow dwellers. Breakfasts well-presented and decent quality ingredients - croissants not rubbery (a good indicator of serious intent in the food department).
Tips for improvement: a biggish teapot needs more than one T-bag. High-point of a full English brekky are eggs done to expectation - so poached eggs can never be hard-boiled, otherwise no different from a less troublesome boiled egg. They MUST BE dippers !!
Get that right and you'll be on your way to perfection.
