My husband and I have just had the most restful stay in a wonderful place called "New Dungeon Ghyll". The staff greeted you with a smile and warmth. Showing you personally to your room, which was clean wanting for nothing. Flat screen tv, hairdryer, tea, coffee etc and ample toileteries. Rich deep towels in the bathroom, with the option to save the environment re washing of same.
The meals were fab, with a great wine choice. There is the option to eat in the main restaurant or the adjacent "Walkers Bar". Having tried both, we could recommend both!
All the staff must have been hand picked as they were a delight. From the chamber maid to the Head of House nothing was too much. Indeed one Australian couple happened to mention a onward journey to Skye and the owner asked if they would like a detailed map printed out to help. Wow they were inspried by this. We must say that this was a get away for us and that is what it was. There are some great walks, scenery that is breathtaking and drives to nearby Coniston, Ambleside, etc the choice is yours. They will even make you a packed lunch! Oh and if you want to take the woof along they have rooms that allow dogs, indeed there was one there during our stay and can honestly say there was never an issue with us or any other guests and the hotel was full. Will surely be back again.

My wife and l went for a three night stay in mid May. We had a wonderful stay, the location was unbeatable with stunning views from our room (6) of the Langdale valley. The staff without exception were friendly,polite and efficient.The food in the restaurant was was imaginative & cooked/presented perfectly including a large full English + all the trimmings each morning. The room itself had been refurbished to a high standard very recently and had everything including a very powerful shower in the ensuite plus lots of storage in the room.All in all a faultless break for us and l have no hesitation in reccomending this hotel anyone looking for a lovely quiet break in the lakes..

The hotel is wonderfully situated for walking direct from the door. We took some friends, so a group of 6 of us stayed for a '5-night dinner, bed and breakfast'. The log fires in the main rooms are ideal after a cold wet day. The staff were friendly and helpful, being attentive without going over the top. The rooms were clean with updated en-suite. The food was tasty and different with daily changes to the evening menu - we were all able to find choices to suit individual taste. We also used the hotel's passes for nearby swimming. We enjoyed our stay and would certainly go back again.

Stayed for three nights to walk and meet up with friends. Hotel was busy with groups on extended stay packages. Odd mismatch between the bedroom, which was modern, and public rooms which were nicely old-fashioned. The lounge had a log fire and comfy sofas. The public bar was rather unappealing and, as implied by other reviews, the bar food, which I had one night, was not very good but the four course restaurant meals were better than average. The staff were very attentive and welcoming and were working very long hours. The breakfasts were a slight disappointment, failing the smoked herring and marmite availability benchmark test . Another guest couple seemed to have two enormous irish wolfhounds staying in their room, which is good if you want to bring your dog: as another guest remarked "if I knew you could have animals that size in your room we would have brought our horse".
