I stayed here last September as a stop-off on the Cumbria Way. For walkers, its ideally located. After a relatively easy 12 mile walk from Coniston, I had time to fit in a rest, climb up to Stickle Tarn and freshen up before dinner.

I had single occupancy of a small double room looking out across the Langdale Valley. It was great for one but maybe a little cosy for two. There was a roomy shower but it wasn't very clean with stray hairs - yeuck! Hoovering and dusting is only done for the bits of the room "on show".

Beware that mobile phone coverage is very limited. Normally I'd see that as a huge plus point but was walking on my own and had arranged to send texts to friends to let them know of my movements and that I was OK. Free wireless internet in the bedrooms.

I made the most of an unseasonally warm late September evening by eating outside. I had an excellent, reasonably priced steak with all the trimmings washed down with superb draught cider. I appreciate that I was the only one eating on the terrace but, when the waitress came out to lift my empty plate she didn't bother to ask if I wanted anything else. I would have liked coffee and dessert but wasn't so desperate for either to go looking for them.
I had coffee in my room from the hospitality tray and made do with my stash of chocolate. However, the hotel lost out on probably £7-£8 but their waitress's omission.

Breakfast was OK. Great, friendly, efficient service but a limited, predictable "choice" if you don't opt for a cooked breakfast. However, in fairness, porridge was provided when I asked for it.

Check-in and out was friendly and efficient.

I don't think I'd recommend the hotel to someone who isn't going to be pursuing outdoors activites locally. Its a great stopover but maybe not a desination.

Perfect location amidst mountains with footpaths in all directions. Car parking was tricky when small car park full.

Not entirely sure what made our “Superior Room” superior as didn't look into any “Standard" rooms but was adequate, spacious and quiet, simply furnished, smallish TV, no real “luxuries” and no bath, just a large (nice hot) shower. Not the best mattress ever.

TV channels oddly only show London and Central – something to do with reception I was told – which isn’t much help for checking the local weather, although a printed forecast is put on the check-in desk every day.

Friendly and attentive staff during our three night stay, cosy residents and public/walkers bars and comfortable lounge, bar food menu rather limited, restaurant food and breakfasts excellent.

Some public areas, notably the doors and walls in upstairs passages very shabby, otherwise all in good order. The condition and simple room furnishing would perhaps not justify the tariff elsewhere but the great location compensates.

We had a delicious soup and sausage sandwich at The New Dungeon Ghyll a couple of weeks ago. The staff were very friendly and the prices reasonable. We will definitely plan a return visit.

The location of the New Dungeon Ghyll is idyllic. The captive occupancy of walkers and climbers could expect an average experience but thats far from the case. The rooms are clean and adequate with fabulous showers and the views are priceless after a good nights sleep. The food is bar or a la carte. The bar food was hearty and tasty. Service was good but at times hard to find staff, however ring the bell as instructed and hey presto someone appeared. The staff were friendly and the seasonal Aussie/Kiwi contingent give a great antipodean welcome. A chilled, relaxed environment for walkers and countryside lovers, reasonably priced with everything you need. Ideal!!!
