November2011 we decided to re-visit the Lake District thirty years after our ability to walk the fells had passed. The New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, below Langdale Pikes, proved to be a good location. The drive from Ambleside to the hotel was through scenery so spectacular and so typical of the Lake District. On arrival our signing in was quick and efficient (you do need to search for the bell to attract a receptionist).Next to reception the inviting lounge with an open fire was too good to resist and we took coffee, leaving our bags in the car until later. Our room was on the ground floor and first impressions were mixed - somewhat dark and sombre - but relaxing.Dated perhaps best describes it.However as we unpacked we appreciated its advantages for walkers and their dog.The room was large, the bed massive, loads of drawer space,a small entrance area for wet-weather gear or an area for a dog bed and as we discovered later a very comfotable bath with as much hot water as you could wish for.In fact the room "grew"on us.Pleasant restaurant, good evening meal friendly staff. Two day menu a little restrictive as the second day had only very minor changes.Bar offered a good alternative menu to the restaurant (as well as a good selection of single malt).Overall the atmosphere was quite informal and very relaxed being suitable for keen walkers, retired walkers and tourists wishing to indulge in the "Lakes experience".The New Dungeon Ghyll is very well situated for many of the well known attractions and places of interest. The young staff were well trained and always very helpful. Our room was well serviced.Easy and swift checking out.
