“Very, very noisy. Do not stay if you are looking for a quiet night”

I stayed here with my wife for one Saturday night in Feb. The whole reason for us staying is that I was doing an organised cycle ride starting first thing 8am Sunday morning.
When we arrived at the Hotel we were a little dubious about the bar downstairs but we were pleasently suprised with our room. We then left for the rest of the afternoon to spend a nice afternoon in Ambleside. We returned at around 10pm to find a bouncer on the door to the bar!! erm this is the Lake District not Blackpool! Bouncers on doors! on entering the bar to go up to our rooms the music was blasting out to a handful of people in there. Again, this is the Lakes, not what i remember from my many previous visits.

Our room was on the first floor, right above the bar. The music was ridiculously loud. Our room was vibrating. we thought "ok, music will surely stop at 11, we can live with that". Nope. After listening to this incessant racket for over an hour we rang the hotel and asked what time the music finished and if it could be turned down. My wife was told in a very unhelpful manner that "the music finishes at 12.00am and I can't turn the music down as i'm not in the bar!". Not good.
we put up with it a bit longer then rang again. This time we were told the music would be turned down. It wasn't! We rang again and we were promised it would be turned down. It wasn't!!
We put up it with till gone 12 when it finally went off. We are only thankful that we hadn't brought our 4 year old daughter with us even though the hotel is advertised as child friendly.
We then had to listen to to everyone coming out of the pub, taxis turning up, cars bipping till about 1.30 in the morning! By this time I was fuming and in no way feeling relaxed and ready to go to sleep. My wife eventually drifted off leaving me awake till gone 5 in the morning. No way was i now able to ride 60 miles round the lakes in 2 hours time, great!

In the morning we complained as we left and were told by a disinterested member of staff that "it says on the webiste that it can be noisy" We have checked. NO IT DOESN'T! why would you advertisde your hotel as being noisy!!! We were also told " well this is a a pub you know" no, you advertise as a hotel offering family friendly breaks with no large groups allowed.

As a result I have missed my ride which i had already paid for and it ruined what had started off as a nice weekend. We have complained direclty to the management but again we have had no response!!

“Not for a restful night away!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 February 2011

I booked two rooms on 31st December 2010 for an overnight stay on Saturday 26th February 2011 as my husband and my brother were due to participate in a 60 mile bike ride at 8:30am this morning.

We checked into the hotel yesterday at 2:20pm and were given the keys to rooms 25 and 26 at the front of the hotel. Not once were we informed that the rooms on the first floor are directly above the bar and music in the evening gets noisy. If we had been told this, I would have requested rooms on a higher floor.

We returned to the hotel yesterday evening at approximately 10:00pm and retired to bed. The music from the bar downstairs was incredibly loud in the bedrooms, so much so that it was not possible to listen to the television properly. At about 10:20pm, I called the main hotel number and asked what time the music would finish and whether it could be turned down as we were struggling to sleep. The lady who answered the telephone asked if I could go down to the main bar and speak to someone there as she was in the private bar in another part of the hotel. I explained that I was already in bed and asked if she had an alternative telephone number for the main bar. I also asked whether it would be possible to move to another room where the music may not be so loud. The lady checked through her papers and said that the hotel was fully booked and that she would go up to the main bar and see if they could do anything. This did not happen and approximately 20 minutes later, I called back. This time, a man in the main bar answered the telephone. He was more understanding and said that he would turn off the base and turn the music down too. Unfortunately, neither happened and we remained awake until midnight when the music ended and the bar closed to non-residents.

As a result of the lack of sleep, my husband and my brother were unable to participate in today’s race, which affects us financially, not to mention the fact that our experience of Ambleside and your hotel has been most unpleasant.

On checking out this morning, I mentioned the problems to the lady on the desk. She was not at all apologetic and explained ‘well, this is a pub really’. She also said that ‘the website says that the rooms on the first floor are noisy so you knew when you booked it.’ I asked if this was indeed the case and she confirmed that ‘yes it is’. Having checked the hotel website today and the booking confirmation email and another website as an alternative, I fail to see that this is made clear. In fact, the confirmation email states that children are welcome here and single sex parties or large groups are not accepted. This does not seem to fit with our experience of last night and I would certainly not hope to stay somewhere like that if my four year old daughter had joined us.

Another point when you book a hotel is that you do not normally choose your room so you do not know which floor you are staying on until you check in. When we checked in, the noise levels from the bar below were not explained to us.

The Churchill Inn appears to be marketed as a more up market establishment with pleasant hotel rooms and an excellent location. The latter two points I agree with, however I am disappointed with the lack of customer care received last night when the problems were brought to their attention. It concerns me that members of staff tell residents that they will do something to alleviate the problems but in actual fact, did nothing and were disinterested when this was raised again this morning.

The hotel is rated 4 star! For me, this was not a 4 star experience and I would not recommend this place for a quiet weekend away!

“central location, friendly staff, clean accommodation.”

read a lot of negative comments on here before we went to the Churchill but I can say we were very pleased with all aspects of our two day stay. The room, no. 25, and the bathroom were very clean with sufficient space for the two of us. Breakfast was efficiently served with a reasonably full plateful of well cooked food and you got what you asked for. The bar area is modern and the service behind the bar good and open til midnight so if you want an early night you may hear a bit of noise from downstairs but I think if you were really tired you would get to sleep no problem. The car park is a bit of a squeeze but they do have a high proportion of car spaces to bedrooms and I did manage to park a 4x4 and back it out up the lane onto the main road. Location first class and the staff were very good when the car park was full and I had to park somewhere else ( they got me a parking disc and I parked overnight at the front of the hotel). I would use the hotel again for short breaks and think it suits younger people best who will not expect to be fussed and pampered and therefore just enjoy the place.

“Had a lovely valentine's weekend.”

The Churchill inn is very central, the room was lovely.. Big, very, very clean and everything you need. I wanted to have some balloons delivered for a surprise for my boyfriend for valentine's and the staff even sorted that out for me. Very helpful and friendly. The parking was free :-) but I'm glad I wasn't driving, It's very narrow and not very big. All I would say is just bear in mind this is a bar as well, at weekends last orders is at 12pm..I great place to stay for couples. We had a really good night in the bar.
