“Just right”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

Clean ,comfortable room. Parking very close. All reception and bar staff very helpful and friendly. Steak dinner was beautifully cooked and presented and exceeded our expectations. The young waitress was attentive and friendly without being intrusive.
Self service breakfast simple but ample with plenty of choice. Extra milk for room tray provided quickly when requested.
The location was very handy for the city centre and next door to the Hull Truck Theatre (which we visited). Modern shopping Mall next door was an added bonus.
We shall certainly use this excellent hotel again.

“Staff wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

The girls on reception make this hotel warm, welcoming and special. They made my weekend away hassle free and nothing was too much trouble. I've visited many hotels in my time and it is rare to find such respectful young girls in a town which has a colourful reputation. The rooms are well equipped. The only downside is that theres never enough milk etc left by the cleaners. Thank you for a lovely stay.

“Really good value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

Lets be clear, this is a budget Hotel. However it is a top drawer budget Hotel. Compared to it's big brother down at the Marina it is 100% better value.

It is spotlessly clean which for English Hotels is a bonus in itself.

Sure it doesn't have the view, the breakfast doesn't compare nor does the bar but it's half the price and you get free internet!

It is almost next door to the Mecrure and it is 1000% better than that.

The staff were fine. Check in and out smooth and prompt.

This part of Hull is confusing if you are driving but it is not a huge issue. Try London!

Room Tip: Try and get a room not facing the road as this part of town is a bit noisy

“Completely Unprofessional!”

I stayed at this hotel on Saturday 10th December, my first stay at this hotel in Hull. I would like to make this clear that i will not be returning!!! For starters there were no directions to the carpark which is hidden away down some back streets. The car park turned out to be pay and display at a cost of £7 which is not stated anywhere on the hotel's website. Upon check-in, there was a young dark haired girl who was clearly doing everything she could to train another member of staff and deal with the large number of guests arriving.

The only good point about this stay was the room itself, very clean and tidy with no disruption from the busy streets below.

I later came down to reception to wait for a taxi out to meet some friends and in the restaurant and bar area there were several young girls there who were clearly employees of the hotel as they weren't exactly being discreet about their conversations. The girls were being loud and calling over the staff who were on shift. Im grateful i checked in earlier on as i fear i would have been waiting a long time had I arrived during this staff party!

I enjoy a good night out with friends to blow off steam, but would never dream of doing this in my place of work, especially if I was discussing the things these girls were! Does the General Manager of this hotel regard this behavior as being professional and acceptable? If I could over hear them, many others must surely have done so too, not a good way to promote the hotel at all!

I checked out as early as possible the following day to save myself being subjected to poor service as a result of a hangover. This may seem like a simple and 'old fashioned' point of view but if this behaviour is acceptable then I dread to think what i would have subjected my family to should i have chosen to bring my young children to this establishment. Previous reviews on this website suggested this was a family-friendly hotel. Well it certainly wasn't on this night!

I am glad that you enjoyed your room here at the hotel and apologise whole heartedly if the event occurred as you described. I can assure you that this type of behaviour is not a normal occurrence, and whilst I find it hard to believe from our current team we have here, it will not be tolerated. Please contact me personally on 01482485700 so that we may discuss this further and resolve the matter in full in a hope to regain your trust.

“Don't stay here over Christmas!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

I regularly visit Hull as i have family there and usually stay in the Holiday Inn Marina or Premier Inn, both of which are excellent. On this occasion we decided to give the Holiday Inn Express as it is situated very close to the train station. We were staying for 4 nights from 23 December.
Two young woman checked us in. Unfortunately they both spoke to us at the same time, one asking us to sign the checkin in form and the other explaining breakfast times which were until 9.30 on week days and 11.30 at weekends. There was no mention that these times would be changed over Christmas.
Our room was on the second floor and was perfectly clean and adequate. However it was freezing and we discovered that the heating/air conditioning control wasn't working. I phoned reception who said he would turn on the heating remotely from there. When we returned to the room later in the evening it was like an oven! So i phoned reception again and he said it was set at 32degrees and he would turn it to 24. I said that was far too hot for a bedroom so he said he would set it to 20. The heating never came on all night and the room was very chilly. In the morning I phoned again and asked for the heating to be turned up and also if they could arrange for someone to repair the control.
We went down to breakfast at 9.30 and the young woman began to close up the area where the food was at 10 o'clock, even though it was a saturday and she had told us when we checked in that breakfast closed at 11.30 on weekends. After breakfast i checked that a maintenance order had gone in to repair our heating control but was then told there was no maintenace available because of the christmas holiday. I asked if we could be moved to another room where the heating control did work but was told this was not possible because there was no housekeeping either and she didn't know which rooms were prepared. So we had to phone reception each time we wanted the heating on or off.
The problem with breakfast times continued for the next 2 mornings with breakfast closing at 10 on christmas day (sunday) and 9.30 on boxing day even though i asked and was told it would close it 10. The young man allowed us to take some breakfast from the buffet on christmas day but on boxing day we just managed some cereal as everything else had been cleared away.
I accept normal service perhaps wasn't possible with a 'skeleton' staff but no housekeeping and a change to breakfast times should have been made clear at check in, and perhaps a sign or note in the rooms could have explained any changes.
Apart from these problems, the hotel was clean, adequate and it a very good location. Just don't stay at Christmas, and check the heating control before you unpack!
